This session aims to encourage passing through the thirds of the pitch using a variety of combination and support play.

Organisation
Same set-up as the warm up.
1 defender from each group goes into another zone to apply pressure (60 seconds).
Rotate so everyone gets a chance as the defender.
Every interception made by a defender earns 1 point. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Last round can be one touch.
Coaching Points
Encourage players stay on their toes and to keep moving.
Encourage fast but accurate exchanges.

Organisation
Defending team starts in the middle third (yellows) and sends 2 players in to win the ball.
The team in possession (whites) knocks the ball around avoiding pressure until THEY decide when to infiltrate the middle third.
Once inside the middle third, the whites must execute a combination (e.g. 1-2, switch, pass) before passing through to the receiving team (reds) for 1 point.
If the yellows win the ball in the whites third, they must find one of their own players in the middle third before passing on to the reds for 1 point.
If the yellows win the ball in the middle third, they must pass to the reds for 1 point.
Each team takes an equal turn in each third.
The team with the most points at the end is the winner.
Coaching Points
- Encourage the team in possession to relax (it's 5v2 after all).
- When is the right time to infiltrate the middle third?
- Encourage spacial awareness.
- Encourage support play offering more than one option for the player on the ball.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation
Add GK's and set-up 2 teams to accommodate numbers.
Keep players in the zone most suited to their favoured position (e.g. defenders in first third).
Players are restricted to their zones unless they pass or dribbling into the next zone.
One other player can also move into the next zone once the ball moves into that zone.
Aim is to work the ball through all three zones from back to front (no long balls over the middle zone).
Coaching Points
- Encourage full-backs to not only go one zone up but to keep going and join the attacking zone.
- Coach to what you want to see on game day or solidify the principles of your style of play.
- Add a neutral if needed to provide another option and ensure success.
