3v3+Targets
Set Up:
1. Mark out a 20x20 yard area with a halfway line
2. Set up 3 of one team in each box with a target player on each end as shown
How To Play:
1. The ball is played by the coach on the outside into one of the teams of 3
2. The team of 3 aims to pass the ball into their target player
3. When the target player recieves the ball they pass it into the team that was previously defending
Optional: A scoring system whereby a team scores a point if they reach their target player
Coaching Points:
1. Looking for defensive unit to slide across as the ball is moved
2. Body position/shape - defensive stance (side on)
3. Reacting quickly and intelligently to play - nearest defender presses the ball as close as they can then drops again once the ball has moved on
4. Scanning - defenders must be constantly aware of distances and angles between each other so gaps are reduced

Playing Into Midfield Area: Passing (25 mins)
Playing Into Midfield
Set Up:
1. Mark a 20x30yrd area in the area of the pitch marked above (as it's relevant to this area of the pitch)
2. Start with two players in the middle and the rest split between the 4 cones on each corner of the area
How To Play:
1. This is a continuous passing exercise - spending 4 minutes on each passing pattern followed by a one minute break
2. The first passing pattern is marked above (passed into the higher midfielder who sets to the lower midfielder) - the two in the middle start in a central position and perform peeling movements
3. Second passing pattern: the ball is played into the low midfielder who then plays a one two with the high midfielder before passing into the receivers (the 1-2 should be played in front of the midfielder to run on to)
4. Third passing pattern: The ball is played into the low midfielder who then passes it to the second midfielder and then overlaps the second midfielder to receive it again
5. Finally, players can choose which sequence they play - this requires clear communication
Possible progressions:
1. Add in 1/2 passive defenders
2. Add in 1/2 active defenders
Coaching Points:
1. Weight and type of pass
2. Communication (verbal and non-verbal)
3. Scanning - midfielders need to be aware of each others positioning
4. Players on the cones: opening up to receive the pass on the back foot
5. Supporting angles (midfielders)
6. Setting a pass can draw defenders out and create space
