Technical Practice (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Decide on the appropriate action. E.g. catch or punch.
  • Judge the line of the ball and get in position to attack the ball.
  • Take off with your strongest leg to enable maximum jump power.
  • Use the correct leg to protect yourself.
  • Be strong, brave and confident when catching or punching the ball.

Organisation

  • This a 10 minute warm-up practice that uses 2 to 4 goalkeepers. This practice works by having a working goalkeeper starting inside the 6 yard box. Another goalkeeper starts as a player to cross the ball. When the player crosses the ball, the goalkeeper must come out to claim the ball confidently. It is important that the goalkeeper who starts as the crossing players mixes up their crosses. For example, high floated crosses, driven crosses at head height and whipped crosses. The two blue mannequins act as passive defenders to start with. Progressions for this activity include:
  • Adding an attacking player to challenge the goalkeeper (this allows for the goalkeeper to make realistic game decisions).
  • Change the location of the cross to allow the goalkeeper to deal with different angles.
  • Add in another player to cross the ball to make the goalkeeper make a decision on who is crossing the ball.

Small Sided Game (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • Decide on the appropriate action. E.g. catch or punch. For example, a crowded 18 yard box or a starting point nearer the front post may mean a punch is better, compared to a catch if the 18 yard box is more clear.
  • Judge the line of the ball and get in position to attack the ball.
  • Take off with your strongest leg to enable maximum jump power.
  • Use the correct leg to protect yourself.
  • Be strong, brave and confident when catching or punching the ball.

Organisation

  • This is a tactical practice that uses 2 goalkeepers, but it can use up to 4 goalkeepers on a rotation. The practice would involves 14 outfield players, and would more than likely be a SSG to finish a session. This is a 9 v 9 game where each team has 2 players in the wide areas of the pitch that are channelled off. To start with, the teams are only allowed to score from a cross from the wide areas (this encourages more crosses). The wide players cannot be tackled or tackle each other. To progress this practice you could add:
  • A scoring system for scoring from a cross compared to a normal goal.
  • A scoring system for every time a goalkeeper deals with a cross. E.g. a catch or a punch.
