Practice Objective:

  • 4v4+3 Rondo practice with gates.
  • Working both BP and BPO and bringing the core skills of first touch, positioning and striking the ball to the fore

Set Up

  • Area 20mx15m
  • 8 flat discs or agility poles for gates
  • 1 bag of balls
  • 3 sets of bibs

Practice Explanation:

  • Mark out area as shown, with 4 gates
  • Divide players into 3 groups - 4v4+3 (adjust to suit). The +3 play with the team in possession of the ball.
  • Team with the ball to maintain possession and play through any of the gates to a teammate for 1 point.
  • Defensive team to win the ball back as soon as possible and then transition to attacking team
  • If the ball goes out of play, team that loses the ball transition to defending and team now in possession starts with a new ball from the side

Progression

  • must complete a number of passes before playing through the gates
  • remove 2 gates, therefore making it harder to score
  • players can RWB through the gates for a point
  • play a 1-2 around the gate for double points
  • Change the +3 to play with the defending team
  • Use different colour discs for the gates - for a certain period players can only score through one colour, or give them a different value
Coaching Points
  • Movement off the ball to to be able to receive between the gates
  • First touch to manipulate the ball around the gate to be able to play away
  • Striking the ball - ball speed and accuracy.
  • First touch under pressure
  • Player awareness - where is the space, where are the free gates?
