4-4-2 is still regarded as the best formation to protect the whole width of the field

Diego Simeone at Atheletico Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti and Claudio Ranieri at Leicester City have had success with this system but seems to be increasingly outdated

4-3-3 was a development of the 4-2-4 system the Brazil wining world cup team of 1962

The extra player in midfield allows a stronger defence,and the midfield could be staggered for different effects.

The 3 midfielders normally play closely together to protect the defence,allowing the two full backs to get forward and assist the wingers

Johan Cruyff,Jose Morininho and Pep Guardiola enjoy playing this system
