Set Up

SET UP:

- 8 Attackers (RED) vs 7 Defenders (BLUE)

- 1 Half pitch

- Defenders using 4-3 formation

- Attackers using 1-5-2 formation

OBJECTIVE:

- Working with defenders, teaching how to handle a situation when the game is opened up wide and there is an overload from opposition.

- Learning an understanding of compacting together through centre of pitch and forcing the opposition to get wide and cross.

- Understanding the role of the player depending on position being played.

Coaching point 1

FIRST POINT:

Back 4 position need to straight away be compact and higher up the pitch as usually they will sit on edge of box with wing backs being in a position where they are 50/50 between the attacking wide players and centre back.

COACH - Left and right back took in and invite the ball to go wide. This stops a situation of a midfielder being able to slide a ball through to an attacker who can find a gap on the half turn. This movement will bring centre backs closer together and keep them central. (Centre backs are called centre backs for a reason. Keep them CENTRAL. Step in if they start going out wide if one of the wide players beat the left back and right back. Midfielder covers that area as the danger will be centrally if ball get there.

COACH- With the left and right back now tucking in, make the defenders have a higher line. This will give the opposition less room to play and create space meaning the attackers not being as creative as they can be.

SECOND POINT:

Three midfielders will be working alot but have important job. They must keep tight through the middle to an extent and not go chasing the ball. Chasing the ball will create pockets of space through centre of pitch which is something we do not want. Player in the middle of the three will be the cover. He will stop any passes that try and reach the striker to hold up. The two other midfielders will be putting themselves in a position which invites the opposition to play the ball to the wide player.

COACH- Body position of players. Can they get side on which is more inviting for the player to put the ball out wide? Go through the understanding of cover and balance so players understand their roles.

THIRD POINT:

The ball has now been played out wide to the left. The right back will go out and show down the line. They will not go straight in as we want the player to get down to the by line as much as possible for the next point. When this is happening the rest of the team stay compact and drop deeper. The centre midfielder on the side of where the ball is will drop into a position where they can press if the ball goes back central, being able to cut out a pass going behind the right back to a moving striker and to cover if the right back is beaten.

COACH- Right backs positioning and body position for the situation. The positioning of the other three defenders. The position of the centre midfielder closest to the situation. The position of the other two centre backs.

FOURTH POINT:

The player has been moved down to the by line. The only 2 options they have is pull back to where he came from, in which a centre midfielder is now in a position to press straight away. Or to play across the six yard box. But with the positioning of the centre backs staying central and midfielder covering the correct areas, this ball is very difficult to make as if it beats the first midfielder the centre back is there to come out and clear the ball. Doing this makes the wing player who is on the ball over think the situation. If the defender can keep standing them off the angle of delivery is getting tighter making it harder. Most mistakes in this situation are caused by over thinking.
