Diamond passing drill

Warm Up Diamond passing drill

- Player one starts with the ball and passes to player 2, player 1 follows his pass and joins the queue at player 2 station

- Player 2 passes to player 3, follows his pass and joins queue at player 3 station

- Passing sequence continues around the diamond

Play lasts 2 minutes around to the right and 2 minutes to the left allowing both feet to be worked

Progressions

- Different combinations such as a 1-2 can be introduced

- Combinations such as player 1 passing to 2, player 2 setting player 1 back, and player 1 playing straight into player 3's feet can also be worked (player 3 would then set player 2 who would then play straight to player 4's feet and so on)

- This allows a more random and free-flowing interaction between the diamond formation and not restricted to simple 5 yard passes

Technical points

- Watch ball onto foot with an open stance and cushion ball with side of foot when controlling

- Pass with side of foot with standing side foot placed adjacent to the ball

- Bring back kicking leg, swing through making contact with side foot and follow through after contact placing your arms out for balance

- Head over the ball, once contact is made, look in direction you want the ball to go

Function - Attacking with midfield diamond

Function - Attacking with a midfield diamond

- Play starts with coach who plays ball into deep lier of the diamond

- Dimaond 4 in red have to keep the ball away from the 2 blue defenders within the white shaded area (not to scale, realistically it would be a 15x15 area)

- Once blue team have made 5 passes they can play ball out wide to full back to cross the ball

- One midfielder from the shaded area and the striker (waiting in blue shaded area) get in the box on the end of the full back's cross, players then return to starting position. The opposite wing is then worked on the next phase.

Technical/tactical points

- Keep correct distances between each other and limit the amount of touches per person in order to shift the ball around quickly

- Penetrative passes between the two defenders is likely to open up play allowing the ball to be shifted around more easily

- Keep the ball on the ground an when receiving the ball, open the body up so that there are options to pass, keeping your head up at all times

SSG - Midfield diamond

Small Sided Game - Midfield diamond

Half pitch, full width

- 9v9 SSG with one team working on midfield diamond against a flat midfield 4

- Emphasis on combination play in the shaded area and encourage wide players to push on

Play lasts for 4x3minutes

- The wider players of the diamond should tuck in in order to overload the centre and encourage an attack in numbers. This may also draw the wingers of the opposition to come inside, creating space out wide
