Session Explanation

The aim of the session is for players to score as many points as possible by penetrating through any of the four visible gates and posting the highest score possible while coping with a variety of different conditions. To start players will operate without a ball and to score a point must penetrate through any of the gates before returning back through a different gate and into the centre square. This will then progress to dribbling with the ball after the players are warmed up and comfortable with the session layout. The player who tallies up the most points before the game stops selects a group forfeit for the others.

Conditions / Challenges

  • Weaker foot only.
  • Specific surface of the foot e.g. instep, toes / laces, outside. (Let the players choose)
  • Players must incorporate skill or turn before going through a gate. (Step over, ball roll, flip flap, Cruyff turn)
Coaching Detail
  • Players keeping their heads up.
  • Keep the ball close to the foot, using small, light touches, pushing the ball not kicking.
  • When possible, use both feet and different surfaces of the foot.
  • When turning keep a low body positioning to aid control and speed.

Session Explanation

The session now progresses into an opposed practice with four players guarding the gate entries. The way players score points remains the same however they must now dribble past a defender on the the way out and the way back in. If a defender can pinch possession from the player attempting to escape through their gate and dribble the ball back into the centre square those two players switch roles.

Conditions / Challenges

  • Players in possession can attempt to knock out another players ball or try to pass it to a defender to derail their points tally.
  • Challenge players to use both feet and try too incorporate skills and turns to beat defenders.
Coaching Detail
  • Encourage players too dribble with their heads up to increase awareness.
  • Look that players are keeping the ball close allowing them to perform and execute turns and skills as well as protect and shield the ball if necessary.
  • Inform players on how they can manipulate the defenders movements, using faints and disguising their intentions with the ball.

Area Size

Age Group & Size

U10s Mixed Ability / 8 Participants

Session Explanation

The practice now progresses into a 4v4 with the aim of the game to score points in teams successfully dribbling the ball through one of the four gates as in the previous exercises. Team with the most points at the end selects a forfeit for the opposition.

Conditions / Challenges

  • Introduce 1/2 touch or 5+ touches no in-between. Encouraging either dribbling or fast ball movement.
Coaching Detail
  • Look to encourage players to think about creating space for their teammates whilst dribbling. Can they create space by holding onto possession and making informed runs?
  • Can players look to create space via dragging more than one defender into them? Frustrating opponents with skills and turns.
  • Encourage players to try and recognise when to slow down play and speed it back up.

Session Explanation

The final practice is a conditioned 4v4 game. As well as this players can only score within the shaded box. Teams play 'keeper when'.

Conditions / Challenges

  • If players have managed the game condition well, progress into a normal game and analyse whether the players are any more comfortable and confident dribbling in tight, pressured areas.
  • For those who are excelling with the ball at their feet, look to challenge them by asking for at least one take on before releasing the ball.
Coaching Detail
  • Can players look too dribble at speed to quickly penetrate defensive lines and create goal scoring opportunities.
  • Encourage players too 'dribble to distract' opening space for teammates by holding the ball and drawing in defenders.
