Warm Up Game (5 mins)

Practice Explanation

To begin two teams will be made and will go into a simple small sided game. Rules include, no corners, and throw-ins must be dribbled in, encouraging the session aims as well as setting a good intensity.

  • How many players can you beat before passing or shooting? 
Coaching Detail
  • Focus on finding and creating space to receive possession, frequent movement to get away from opponents, so opportunities to turn/receive and dribble at defenders is possible. 
  • Observe individual tenancies, how they receive, specific techniques and use of their body.
Considerations/Progressions
  • If 1v1s situations aren't being produced, consider challenging players with assigned opposition players, meaning one specific player can only tackle another.
  • Reinforce positive behaviours.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Small weighted touches, keeping control of the ball, one touch per step. Different parts of the foot, front foot, outside, inside. Narrow legs to protect possession from being nipped away.
Technical Tactical
Creating space utilising positive ball and body movements.
Technical Physical
Shielding possession, using arms and upper body to distance the defender.
Technical Psychological
Decision making, which part of the foot, what movement to use in differing scenarios.

1v1 Gate Game (15 mins)

Practice Explanation

Progressing the practice into a skill practice through pairing players up and introducing a gate system. Players will score points by scoring in either goal however, can add additional points if they can complete dribbles through any of the gates. One gate equals 1 point plus a goal equals 2 points for the player. If defenders win the ball or the attacker misses the goal their points tally re-sets to zero.

Challenges

  • How many gates can you get through before shooting? 
Coaching Detail
  • Encourage little touches and close control, see if players can have one touch for every step. 
  • What part of the foot is being utilised in specific situations? Front of the foot moving forwards, outside of the foot to spin away, sole of the foot to protect. 
  • Protecting possession, can players show their backs to defenders, close their legs and shield possession utilising their upper bodies. 
Considerations/Progressions
  • Uneven numbers. Possible roles, odd player can be challenged to pick up and move gates, encouraging players to play with their heads up. Set up four corner boxes which the odd player moves between, if players can pass into them during their visit playing a one two before scoring, they gain an additional point. Finally, odd player as a floater, helping struggling players relieve pressure.
  • Reinforce positive behaviours. 
  • Match players up with similar abilities.

Directional 1v1 Gate Game (15 mins)

Practice Explanation

Progressing the practice into an SSG through making the game directional. Players and their teams will score points as per the last practice but can now only score in one assigned goal with a goalkeeper introduced.

  • What skills or techniques can be performed to dribble past the opponent? 
Coaching Detail
  • Can we incorporate faints to beat the defender? Dropping our shoulder to gain an advantage. 
  • Changes of pace and direction, accompanying faints, tricks or skills. 
Considerations/Progressions

Conditioned Game (10 mins)

Practice Explanation

Session now progresses into a conditioned game. No corners, or throw-ins, only dribble ins. Dependent on ability and engagement throughout the session, introduce, can only play forward passes, 1v1 attacking and defending pairs or must be 2 or 5+ touches on the ball nothing in between.
