SO - few like to defend, fewer still like that switch from BP->BPO and virtually no one looks at "tracking back" with enthusiasm. It depends largely upon how we sell it to the players. Helping players to understand, especially forwards and midfielders, that by tracking back and getting into recovery positions - this can very quickly turn into an attacking position or goal-scoring opportunity. I've seen too many practices and I've conducted many myself where you win the ball and then the practice stops and the other team start with the ball again - there is ALWAYS something for the defender to do when they win the ball - it's fostering a hunger and desire to switch on when there's a turnover of possession.

So, what are we working on again? transition: attack to defence.
Explanation
4 whites in one square / 4 blues in the other square / 2 neutral players (magic men) in the middle zone. We're sending 2 defenders over into 1 square making it 4v2 with this caveat: to score, the attacking team (BP) must complete 3 passes and play it to the magic men who then switch it to players in the other square, and trigger a 4v2 there. The 2 defender though, the try to win it and score in the goal.
Scoring
BP - 3 passes and switch it with the magic men = 1 point. (increase to 5 / make pitch smaller if too much success).
BPO - press the ball, regain possession and score in the goal = 1 point.
Progression
1. Each team now will have a GK - introduce positioning to improve width and depth. If 2 defenders win the ball, they shoot and the GK saves it, she can play out from the back to restart play | we begin to bridge the gap between training and game.
2. Neutral players now, when they receive must hit the opposite GK to switch play. GK restarts play from the back.
Coaching Points
+ look for cues or triggers to press (initially hidden learning but make explicitly clear) e.g. soft pass, poor first touch, bouncing ball, too much space in front, head down and not scanning.
+ big and wide in possession | show me the shape.
+ small and compact out of possession | show me the shape. Remember attackers, when you become defenders, make that pitch small.
+ use the magic men if they're available, even before 3 passes.
+ stop play | guide discovery - blues started as attackers, lost the ball to white and immediately have to think about doing what? yeah blocking the goal and collectively squeezing player in possession.
+ defenders, if the attackers get to 3 passes, and you all decide to go and press, who are they going to play to now? - yeah they might look to the neutral to score. So, if you can't get pressure on the ball, what might you have to do? - yeah, maybe just drop-off a little bit and don't give up that space behind.
+ defenders, screen and slide - one press the ball carrier, if dangerous, two provide cover and balance: rotate roles as and when required.

Explanation
Half Court - 4v4 (subs rotate in).
Samba Soccer - mini-goals / boxed areas off-limits when defending / no corners / kick-in or dribble-in from sideline (players decision).
Scoring
score in the mini-goal = 1 goal
win or regain possession and score in mini-goal = 2 goals
beat a defender 1v1 and score in mini-goal = 2 goals
Progression
1. Pair players with their opposite number: encourage tight marking (DEF) and runs to lose marker (ATT).
Coaching Points
+ big and wide in possession. Remember, we need someone to be brave enough to pop up in the middle of the field to give us a pivot and chances to run-off.
+ if pressing, block with left, block with right - mirror the attackers movement - shut down any chance they have of playing through into the space behind you.
+ small and compact out of possession. Remember, blocking the ball carriers path to the goal is not as simple as retreating - what might the attacker do if given space to run at the goal, yeah, he's going to have a crack.
+ look for opportunities to press - cues or triggers e.g. soft pass, poor first touch, bouncing ball, too much space in front, head down and not scanning.
+ when you're attacking and lose possession, how quickly can we transition into defending - pressing high if the opportunity is there (cues/triggers) or drop back to slide and screen killer passes into middle third or our back third.
+ because we've mentioned shape and positioning in BP/BPO - we can touch on topics like playing out from the back and through the thirds. This will be a pre-cursor to more detailed work in subsequent sessions.

we're working on transition: attack to defence. Most of all, I'm interested in how quickly we adapt to our changing roles as a player - especially when turnover of possession is high.
Explanation
Blues set up with 3 players on different sides of the square and 1 player in the middle of the square; the 2 White players set up as defenders in the middle. Defenders can only tackle the blue player in the middle. To score, Blues have to get the ball from one end through the square to the opposite end. If the Whites win the ball in the middle, they keep it for 5 passes against the blue in the middle. Give scenarios and ask leading questions about the importance of outside players' movement to score goals: provoke thought before action. Players remaining will work on FT technique and rotate in periodically.
Scoring
Blue - passing from one side of the square, through the middle, to the opposite side.
White - tackle the middle man and try to keep it for 5 passes.
Progression
1. If whites win the ball in the middle, whites can now score in either of the two mini-goals. Now, what do we think the blues become then? Yeah, defenders - so blues on the outside you might now be blocking and getting yourself in between the goal and the what? The goal and the player in possession. So now, it's a quick changeover and the transition we talked about | give visual example.
2. Same game - but if the blues can pinch it back after they've lost possession to the whites, we'll give them a goal for that | give visual example. So, Blues can score (a) end to end, or (b) interception.
Coaching Points
+ now, when you regain the ball in the middle whites, what do you do quickly? - go straight to either goal. Remember blue, we're working on the transition so what's your first thought? - block the goal, and if you can do that, what might you do then? - maybe go and press, try to get the ball back off these whites.
+ Blues want to make the pitch what? - Big. But the minute you give it away, show me what you might do. Yeah, you might have to drop if you think whites have a chance of scoring early, but if they're a bit slower - you might think about pressing.
