Defending Corners in a 4-2-3-1
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation
Split players into 2 teams -2 Blue feeders and 6 Red players - 2 wide players; 2 FB's and 2 CB's. FB's to take a post each. CB's on edge of the 6 yard box.
Blue feeders feed under arm or by taking a throw in from mid way between corner and edge of the area. Alternate direction of feeding.
Effect Position of the Defenders:
Nearest FB: Position Just outside and just ahead (half a yard) of the post nearer the thrower.
Furthest FB: Position on the goal line a yard from the furthest post.
CB's: Positioned on the 6-yard line, covering area directly in front of the goal.
Wide players: Positioned on the corner of the penalty area.
Aim
Red FB/CB's clear the ball by either heading it out or passing it out to the wide players, who recycle the ball back to the Blue servers.
Coaching Points:
Mental Strength: Committment and determination to get to the ball first and clear it. They should use whatever method they can; this could be their head, feet or simply getting in the way.
Movement: Fast and direct straight at trhe ball to get in front of the attackers and clear it as quickly and effectively as they can.
The Defenders should stay deep until the ball is crossed and watch the flight of the ball and close down the attackers as the ball travels. The defensive clearances should have height and distance.
Good communication between the Defenders, together with their GK, is essential.

Progression 1
Position 2 Blue Players on the edge of the area.
If the ball falls short to the Blue players on the edge of the area, they have 3 seconds in which time to try to score. Red players 1 & 2 must react quickly and close the Blue players down to stop them shooting - as must the CB's. No turning of the back on the player in possession. 'Quick, Slow, Sideways, Low'. Must ensure they position themselves between the goal and the ball.

Progression 2
Add 2 Red Players (6 & 8) plus 3 Blue Players (2 CF plus Attacking MF)
CB remain Zonal
6 & 8 Man2Man Blue Attacking MF.
Coaching Points

Progression 3
Introduce Red no. 9 & 10 & Red GK.
Red team aim remains to clear the ball to Red 9 who recycles the ball to a Blue server. Blue team have 10 seconds from the corner in which time to score.
If the Red Players obtain possession:
Safety First.
Otherwise, seek to move the ball to Red 10?
If Red 10 obtains possession:
Effect Red 4,5,6 & 8 - OUT
Effect Red 2 & 3 - high & wide as quickly as possible to provide outlet for attack.
Effect Red 7 & 11 OUT to support Red 10 - make themselves available for a lay off.
Effect Red 10 - Go to Show; Show to Go; Slide; Upon receiving the ball, can Red 10:
1. offload to either either Red 7 or 11
2. offload to Red 2 & 3 if available?
3. offload to Red 9
4. run with the ball at Blue Defenders
Effect Red 9 & 10 - never on the same line; Red 10 always deeper then Red 9? Not necessarily - why not switch to create passing line if need be; Provide support for each other; Move the ball quickly if counter attack is on - or hold the ball up and await support.
Progression:
1. Servers now cross the ball in from the corner spot.
2. Introduce Blue MF to mark Red 9 & 10
Coaching Points:
CB's must stay goal side with their attackers.
Mental Strength: Committment and determination to get to the ball first and clear it. They should use whatever method they can; this could be their head, feet or simply getting in the way.
Movement: Fast and direct straight at trhe ball to get in front of the attackers and clear it as quickly and effectively as they can.

Progression 4
1. The GK must provide an instruction everytime the ball is crossed over from the corner.
Effect the GK:
The GK is in the centre of the goal line, at a 45 degree angle to the field.
The GK needs to take control of the situation and communicate to the defenders exactly what he wants. The communication needs to be clear, concise and calm. The instructions depend on the cross. Typical instructions are:
'Keeper's' if they can catch it, which will alert the Defenders to move out of the way.
'Away' if the GK wants the Defenders to deal with the cross and clear it; or
'Safe' if the cross is going out of play.

2 & 3 protect the posts.
4 & 5 positioned on the edge of the 6 yard area
6 & 8 picking up opponents runners
7 & 11 safeguard short corner, protect the second ball on the edge of the area and pick up runners - also act as a conduit to counter attack
10 stays in an attacking position to act as a conduit and support 9 in the event of a counter
9 stays high to press the opponents centre backs.
Zonal or Man 2 Man - combination of each. 4 & 5 are zonal passing players on as necessary. 6 & 8 are Man2Man.
