Pressure, Cover, Balance Defending
Pressure - 1st defender closest player to the ball - SPRINT to ball to stop, choppy steps once you arrive do not stab. (Force into middle in our "green light" attacking 1/3, force out wide in "yellow light" middle 1/3 force out wide in our "red light " defensive 1/3
Cover - 2nd and 3rd defenders cover the space behind pressure off their hip
Balance - weak side or last defenders covering the space always see ball and see player responsibility staying defensive goal side of the players

Defending a Goal Kick - "Green Light" Attacking 1/3 area of the field - Defensive Pressure, Cover Balance concepts
Pressure Defender - high pressure force ball in to the middle (sprint then choppy step cannot stab)
Cover Defender (s) Left Defender can cheat high because he is strong side. He cannot get beat by the pass or long ball out so if they are looking to kick it out he must drop back.
Center Mid is also a cover defender in the middle of the field and where we want to force them to play. If they are going to play long he must drop cannot get beat by the ball.
Balance Defender (s) - Weak side (not the ball side) Right Mid and Right Defender. Must tuck into the middle of the field but still see the player out wide do not let them get behind them. If the play switches to their side they must shift immediately.
Center Defender - always the last defender he is the bottom point of the diamond. Must always be strong side he follows the ball and stays behind wherever it is he is the last man before potential breakaway. He will often times have a player to mark tight.
Goal Keeper - Must always stay engaged he is a balance defender as well constantly moving with the ball wherever it goes and calling out players in front on weak side for defenders to see.

If you are the pressure defender and get beat you need to SPRINT back to the spot defending the goal from where the next player left. The next closest player has to step up to the ball to become that new PRESSURE. If you get beat and track to the ball now we have 2 defenders on the ball and we do not want this. Weak side player needs to sprint back if they are behind the ball back into that middle space to see the ball and see the player. The other cover defender starts to slide and stay in coverage but DO NOT step to the ball creating 2 players going to 1 ball. 1 player with the ball 1 player defending the ball the rest are always find the new area to become pressure, cover or balance depending on where the ball is. Easier said then done this takes absolutely hard work, team effort, talking.

Areas of the field - Defensive Concepts
"Green Light" - Attacking 1/3
High Pressure on the ball. Try to force them to play into middle of the field where our cover help defense is
"Yellow Light Area" - Middle 1/3
Smart pressure on the ball. Slow down pressure and try to force them out wide away from the middle to the sidelines.
"Red Light Area" - Defensive 1/3
Must STOP the ball giving no space to shoot, cross etc. HIGH URGENCY TO GET THIS BALL OUT RED RED RED. Always force the play out and keep the ball out of this area for as long as possible.
Middle Line
Weak Side = the ball is not on your side of the field so you must tuck into center line (SEE BALL SEE PLAYER defensive goal side behind player
Strong Side = the ball is on your side and you are either pressure or cover defender
You do not cross over to the other side of that line unless it is an EMERGENCY (i.e breakaway opportunity, clearance in space, through ball and you know 100% you can get to it Red Light Area)
