Session Explanation
To begin the session our focus will be of the actions and responsibilities of the 1st defender. The group is split off into attackers, defenders, two servers and two goalkeepers. To begin play, defenders pass into the servers who turn out and play into the attacker. The attacker will then play 1v1 versus against the defender in an attempt to either score (2 points) or dribble/pass through the end gate (1 point), defenders will score 2 points for preventing any successful attacks and 1 point for ensuring the attacker is restricted from a shot on goal.Area Size

Technical Use body positioning to force the ball carrier into playing predictably / Pressing players should look to turn off their front foot to aid quick changes of direction |
Tactical Angle of approach, can we manipulate the ball carriers actions with arched runs / Force play into our teammate |
Physical Acceleration to close the space / De-acceleration to prevent being flat footed / Arm out to harry opposition or maintain distance / Body strength to challenge for possession in 1v1 duels |
Psychological Decision making, can we win the ball or should we hold up play? / Anticipation of oppositions actions, looking at body shape and movements to determine possible outcomes / Awareness, where's my teammate, whats my opponents weak foot, can I force them to use it? |
Social Fun / Engaging / Competitive |
Session Explanation
Teams now have two goals to defend and two goals to score in, whilst being split into four groups of 4. To score points teams must pass or dribble through either gate in front of them. Upon scoring the next two sets of teams will begin the practice. The practice always begins with the defending team passing into the offensive team via a diagonal pass allowing the player pressing to move as the ball moves.

Technical Use body positioning to force the ball carrier into playing passes near our covering defender / Attempt to pinch possession tackling with our front foot whilst side on |
Tactical Working as a unit, one player presses the other drops and covers / Depth & Positioning of covering defender, can they see both attackers at all times? / Side on second defender always mirroring the body positioning of teammate / No more than 3-4 yards deep and never more than 5 yards from teammate / Do they feel upon the action of passing they'd reach their attacker on their first touch? |
Physical Acceleration to close the space / De-acceleration to prevent being flat footed / Arm out to harry opposition or maintain distance / Body strength to challenge for possession in 1v1 duels / Work rate, ensuring we remain compact and in position consistently |
Psychological Decisions, who presses, who covers? / Adapting, can we move positions instinctively? / Anticipation, can players anticipate the ball carriers intended actions, through analysing their body shape and movements |
Social Fun / Engaging / Competitive / Working as a team, getting out and dropping in to cover |

Psychological Anticipation / Decision making, recognise the trigger and when to close the space |

Session Explanation
Finishing the session with 2v2 small sided games. Players must run around the outside of the pitch entering through the gates on the opposite side, whichever pair of players are through the gate first will receive the ball from the goalkeeper facing them. From here 2v2 battles begin, to score a point, players must either score or prevent a goal, tallying up their totals till the session end. Ensure goalkeepers have plenty of footballs in their nets to restart play at speed.
