Set up: Link technique to receiving a back pass and passing to a nearby team mate (can be the same team mate if opponent drawn towards the ball away from recipient) to maintain or build possession.
Organisation: Players in the medium sized square/ shape perform sidefootpasses, clockwise then anti-clockwise, with the same progressions.
Coaching points: - Ensuring the ball is slightly forward and to the side of the kicking foot, take a step to the side of the ball towards the target player with the non-kicking foot, while extending kicking leg and opening the inside of the foot.
-bring the sidefoot through the middle of the ball, following through a low trajectory towards the target player.
- If receiving the ball, have feet in opposition/ split stance, look to either control the ball with the sole of the front foot or take a step back to cushion the ball with the back foot.

Set up: Emphasise that this pass is to penetrate defensive lines and get the ball in more advanced areas or the pitch, or in wide areas quickly behind a defensive line.
Organisation: Players in the medium sized square/ shape perform Drill passes, clockwise then anti-clockwise, with the same progressions. The ball is drilled just off the ground arriving at the receiver below the shins.
Coaching points: - Ball slightly forward and to the side of the kicking foot, take a step to the side of the ball towards the target player with the non-kicking foot, while extending kicking leg, knee slightly bent, toes pointing down.
- Extend knee and kick through middle of the ball with the laces of the boot, following through a low trajectory towards the target player.

Set up: Decision making what is the best method of distribution, look to get the ball to the furthest player away.
Organisation: Players now can alternate between the three techniques in the large square, encourage the players without the ball to move to receive the ball. Ball can also be gathered by hand.
Progression: Do a 3v1 possession game, where the 1 can also use their hands to intercept. If the goalkeeper in the middle (player out of possesion) intercepts, or deflects out of the play area, the last person to touch the ball goes in the middle. First pass/ roll is free from being intercepted.
Coaching points:
- Decision making; understanding that the roll is used for distances of up to 10 yards, sidefoot pass is used for up to 15 yards and drilled pass is used for up to 40 yards. All three techniques are used to send the ball on the ground, for the recipient to control with their feet.
- Reinforce previous coaching points.

Organisation: 3v3+1 game, neutral player plays for team in possession. Game is starts with neutral player who passes to the keeper who either picks the ball up or uses feet unopposed initially. If the ball goes out for a throw, the goalkeeper from the team in possession restarts play. Ensure there are plenty of footballs by each goal to aid quick restarts.
Progressions: Free-play, play with usual football rules; If the keeper is involved in the build up, the goal is worth three; make the game a 4v3 if one team is struggling.
- Reinforce previous coaching points, focussing how and when for each technique (decision making).
- Encourage outfield players to use the goalkeeper to maintain/ build possession
- Movement towards the ball, create angled passing lanes for the player on the ball.
- Goalkeeper to have a square or split stance body shape to receive, half turn for outfield players or split stance to receive on back or front foot.

Roll
Set up: 3 squares of differing sizes using flat markers appropriate to the technique that will be practised, 1 ball per 2 players, can also create a triangle and use 1 or 2 footballs between 3.
Demonstrate technique, emphasising the purpose this technique is to quickly give the ball to a near team mate within 10-15 yards, when the ball is in hand.
Organisation: Player(s) with the ball to roll to adjacent team mate in square, clockwise initially, then anti-clockwise.
Progressions: use trigger word of "change" to change direction the ball is sent; allow goalkeepers to decide when to change (left or right).
Coaching points:- if right handed, lunge towards target with left foot, while extending right arm, fingers spread behind ball in palm of the hand.
- Lower the body, and with the arm extended roll the ball underarm at a low trajectory , to ensure ball arrives quick and accurately to receiver.
- Ensure arm and right foot follow through to regain a balanced stance.
