Protecting

20:00 - 20:20 (20 minutes)

Equipment: 8 cones and >2 footballs

Key coaching points:

  • Don't show the ball to defender
  • Move the ball using different parts of the foot (sole, inside and outside) - twist and turn
  • Take a touch away and then pass

Additional coaching points:

  • Use of arms when defending - see the ball
  • Sprint to close down the ball - slow down last 2/3 steps

Progressions:

  • Start - semi-opposed - no tackling but allow for pressure on the ball
  • 5 mins - change directions
  • 10 mins - move to opposed and allow players to poke the ball away
  • 15 mins - change directions

Jamie to drive out-of-possession

The game:

  • One floater to another to score a point
  • First to 5 - tell me when a team has won

Key coaching points:

  • Be brave to stay on the ball
  • Lots of touches to unbalance defender
  • Twist and turn away from defenders - don't show the ball or they'll poke it away
Additional coaching points:

  • Intensity out-of-possession must be high - make it competitive
