Switching Play (20 mins)

Set Up

*Pitch set up as illustrated, with 3 areas, middle and two channels either side.

*3 goals/gates at each end of the area, this should encourage switching possession.

*In each wide channel place a neutral FB.

Challenges

*If you can score via an overlap with neutral FB counts for two goals.

*Play quickly, as playing in a tight area.

*Set you team in a formation as organisation is key (team ownership)

Learning Objectives

1. Move the ball quickly playing from side to side, when the opportunity arrises can you use a FB to create an overload in wide areas.

2. Looking at rotating and filling other players positions if they move out.

Creating Overloads (20 mins)

Set Up

*Pitch set up as illustrated, with 3 areas, midfield and two channels either end with 2 defenders and 1 striker.

*3 goals/gates at each end of the area.

Challenge

*Can the CB step into midfield with the ball to create an overload.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognise when to drive into midfield, is there space or not.

2. If you cannot drive in, find the no.4 who can play to other CB who then should be able to drive in.

3. When CB drives in, make sure when ball is moved on he then keeps position to maintain depth and if ball needs to be recycled.

Breaking the Block - Game (20 mins)

Practice Organisation

*Area set up, as illustrated, area divided into 2 zones, with a central 5yd pocket of space in middle, as a free zone.

*Each team is arranged in 2 groups of 4v3 in favour of Defending team in each main zone.

*Receiving player looks to turn & break defensive line with an incisive pass or run with the ball at the defenders.

Progression

*Off-side rule applies.

Detail

*Attention to receiving skills with open body shape.

*Control ball into desired space.

*Looking for disguised passes, with players electing to use ground or aerial passes.

*Clever movement aimed at unbalancing & moving D’s out of good defensive positions.

4. Selecting whether to pass or run with ball to advance play.
