Set-up

Function- Defending from the front with a front 3

Organisation:

Coaching the BLUE team

Blue team have 5 players in the function (based on a 1-4-3-3 formation)

Red team have 5 outfield players a goalkeeper and a target player at the end

(based on a 1-4-3-3 formation

-Blue team aim to try win the ball back quickly and high up the pitch and must score within 8 seconds when they are in possession

-Red team must play out from the back into a defender before they can play the midfielder who can play the pass into the target player to gain a point. Defender can play into target man once they pass the red cone set out.

Blue team set up so they are splitting the red team, to create a problem for them to play out from the back,

Retreat to the yellow cones so the play can start and the blue team can try win the ball back in different scenarios that occur during the red team's play from the back in various styles.

1st scenario-

Centre backs narrow up on the 'D' and full backs drop deep to receive-

Blue team positioning-

- #7 presses the LB, at an angle so that LB can only see the touchline or inside to the CB

- #9 cover run to shut off the pass back inside to the red CB #5

- #11 cover run inside to occupy the other CB, leaving the opposite FB free and furthest away from the ball

- #10 get's tight and goal/ball side to the red #6 so the option is not available

- #8 read his wingers run and angle to press the ball, so he can then assist with either shutting down the passing lane into the red #6 or either move across to support the winger if the fullback decides to take him on

What if the play get's switched?

2nd scenario

Same organisation from the Blue team but mirrored as they shift across the pitch to close down the opposite fullback in possession.

3rd scenario

CB's split and push the fullbacks futher up field, maybe the screener drops deep to receive the ball.

- Blue team holds original shape as they are still splitting red positions, but need to be aware of their distances.

-React to where the ball gets played.

-Similar movements to the previous scenarios as the blues want the reds to have limited passing options with only the furthest player being the option,

-Blue #9 to arc the run so the angle is shut off for the CB to step infield or play into his team-mates as they have been closed down.

-Blue #11 reacts to #9 movement to shut down the pass into the fullback, and can also assist in pressing the bal as a pair if the #10 has the red #6 occupied
