U8s Shooting Skill Session (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Skill session aim is for the striker to get a shot away before closed down and whilst under pressure to test technique in game scenario. Shooting distance replicates typical shooting distance in a U8 5x5 SSG.
  • Demo with players.  Coach involved first to explain, run through slow,  then get the players to  rehearse one phase. Ask if it is clear and understand. Any questions.
  • Explain focus and learning from the session, reason why and how their technique will be tested and for how long.
  • Players receive a ball from the centre circle. Pass five one touch passes between each other. One player passes the ball through to lay off a shot for the other who runs onto it and shoots at the goal (with keeper).
  • The fifth pass acts as a trigger for the defender on the yellow cone by the goal to press the ball and space before the attacker can get a shot off.
  • Player controls the ball and shoots or shoots first time using appropriate technique.
  • Striker follows the shot and becomes the defender.
  • Challenge: 2 points for scoring between post and cone.
  • Defender wins a point for scoring.
  • Goal Keeper wins a point for each save.
  • Progession
  • + Shoot first time
  • +Play in air to control before shooting.
  • +Technical balance repeat with left foot.
  • +Play with 2 defenders closing attacker down.
  • +Play with goal keepers for shot stopping practice.
  • +Perform a trick to create space to shoot.
  • - Passive defender / no defender.
  • - /+ Defending / Attacking player starts closer to the goal.
