  • 3 goals are awarded for scoring in the central goal,
  • 1 goal is awarded for scoring in the wide mini goals.
  • The uneven scoring encourages blues to maintain a compact shape, defending the middle of the pitch. Reds are encouraged to play around the blue team and exploit the resulting space out wide to score in the wide mini goals.

Block 2 Principle of play - Play Through (4mins)

  • 3 goals are awarded for scoring in the wide mini goals,
  • 1 goal is awarded for scoring in the central mini goal.
  • The uneven scoring encourages blues to defend the wide areas. Reds are encouraged to exploit the resulting space through the middle and score in the central mini goal.
  • For each block, when blues win the ball their aim is to score in the red goal under a countdown clock 6 seconds). All goals scored by blue count double.(used as motivation)
  • Play will always start from GK for RED team.

Progressions & Regressions

  • Impose a touch/time limit, e.g. three touch or three seconds (progression)
  • Remove a blue player (regression)
  • Add a red player (regression)

PLAY AROUND (5 mins)

BLUE team managed to defend compact and narrow as a unit.

Play will always start from RED GK and play into either CB. CB position themselves in shaded area either side of GK.

WHAT IF

Problem - BLUE front 3 defend narrow (using 18 box as a guide).

Solution - RED full backs are COACHED to play high and wide looking to receive the ball on the half turn and look to play progressive passes forward into midfield.

GK - Quick ball speed into CB, decision making of GK dependant on BLUE 9 position (left or right CB)

RCB and LCB- movement within shaded area, body position, back foot, see 3 corners of the pitch

RB and LB - high and wide position passed orange markers beyond BLUE Wide forward. Back foot,

CDM - position centrally between both full backs, not on same passing line, scanning behind

SSG (15 mins)

BREAKING LINES - IN POSSESSION - SSG

Area Size; Player Numbers; Organisation

  • Mini goals are removed and replaced with big goal for BLUE team to defend. Pitch is now rectangular, running from red team goal on centre circle to goal line at the other end. Orange discs are now the halfway line.
  • RED 9 v 8 BLUE (RED no.9 added yellow man now plays as midfielder for RED and GK and CB are added to BLUE team ,
  • RED team now in GK-4-1-2-1
  • BLUE team now GK-2-2-3

PLAY AROUND, THROUGH OR OVER

Blue team are managed out of possession.

Out of Possession (Coached Team) Defending The Lines

Fast Pressure on the ball

Protect the middle

Stay narrow & compact

Stop split passes

Protect the space behind

  • The aim is for the RED team to find ways to play through, around or over BLUE team and score.
  • All goals scored by blue count double TIME LIMIT of 6 SECONDS

Tempo change Speak to players on a terminal break about the tempo/intensity they play with. explain that if they look to play at a continuous tempo it becomes easy to read by the opposition so it is important to increase and decrease the tempo from time to time to keep the opposition guessing. Happy for ball to be played backwards and be patient. Look to draw (tease) opposition out of position and play quicker to get higher up the pitch.

Block 3 Principle of play - Play over (4mins)

Offside is introduced and blues are managed to maintain a high line.

Reds are encouraged to play balls over the blue line when appropriate. 1 goal is awarded for each completed pass over the blue line.

WHAT IF

Problem - BLUE team high press leaving space in behind

Solution - RED team play OVER the defence and put the CF through on goal

Block 4 Free play -Reinforcing principles of play (6mins)

Red team are encouraged to make good decisions as to when to play around, through or over. A goal is awarded each time the line is broken by playing around, through or over.

WHAT IF

Problem - BLUE Striker / Midfield drop off leaving space in front for RED CB/CDM

Solution - RED player from deep run with the ball forward and drive THROUGH the line yourself

Progressions

  • Apply a time restriction within which red must score after they have crossed the half way line. Failure to score within the time limit means they have to play around/through again. Alternatively possession passes to the blue team (Progression)
  • RED team has to either play around / play through if having too much success (vice versa)
