1v1 to wide goals (10 mins)

4 wide goals 

Dotted endzone 

  • Players go 1v1 
  • Players can only score once they have crossed into the enzdone 
  • The team that got scored on, restarts
  • If ball goes out coach kicks new ball in to start.

  • Penetration- Attacking the space 
  • Change of Pace - especially when past the defender attack quickly 
  • Close Control
  • Change of Direction - get defender turned or facing own goal
  • Deny Space- Close gap on attacker, away from goal 
  • Delay- Don’t overcommit, make them make the move 
  • Positioning- Channel opponent away from goal or towards 2nd defender

Dribbling 1v1 (20 mins)

Organization

-12 player (split into 2 groups)

-see diagram for set-up and equipment

-area approx. 20x15 yards (5 yard "scoring zone")

 

Play is started by red player A  dribbling towards the scoring zone. Once close to the the zone red player shoots and then immediately becomes the defender to defend the next attacker ( white player)

Possible variations/progression

-can attack either goal

Coaching Points

-good first touch forward, attack defender at speed, use of moves, changes of speed/directions

-quick transition from defence to attack

-accurate finishing

1v1 or 2v2 Dribbling

- Two teams split diagonally to each other, with the players from one team starting with the ball laid off by the coach.

- Rotate team roles every three attempts, and player opposition every time the team roles change.

- Players receiving the ball from the coach have to dribble through either set of cones, using the coach at any time for a 1-2.

- If the other player wins the ball, they have to play into the goal. 

- If the play goes on too long, start to countdown from five.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
The weight of their first touch; Moving the ball away from opponents by redirecting it into available space
Technical Tactical
Change Direction/Change your pace. Changing your pace is necessary if you don´t want to be predictable to defenders

1v1 (20 mins)

Equipment Needed:  

  • Pinnies
  • Cones
  • Soccer balls
  • 2 to 4 small goals (or use cones)

Session Organization:  

  • Set up: 2 teams, one team in Pinnies.  Set up as shown. (Have 2 fields for large numbers- No more then 10/11 players per field)
  • 3 goals- Two wide goals and one in the middle. The two wide goals can be shot in for one point, the center must be dribbled through with the ball under control for 2 points.  
  • The attacker must be in the scoring zone to earn their points. 
  • If the defender wins the ball they have two goals to score. 
  • Rotate offense and defense. Keep score and make it a competition.
  • Discuss that defenders must press the ball so they can win the ball back as fast as they can. 
Coaching Points:
  • Head up/ Scan the field
  • Find the space/ Attack the space (drive)
  • Change Direction and Speed
  • Be brave/ creative
  • When should you use small touches vs big touches?

Though the focus is on ball mastery, discuss defending, body shape, patience, pressing

Organization:
- A and B dribble their balls around the poles and goals and then pass into the small goal.
- Whoever scores first- gets a ball served into them by coach (C) to attack 1v1 to the small goal
- Have players keep their score

Progression
- A second attacker and defender can be added to make a 2v2

Dribbling Relay (15 mins)

Equipment Needed: 

  • Cones
  • Soccer Balls
Set-Up:
  • Players are split into three teams with each team having three players each.
  • On the coaches whistle, the first player from each team will dribble their ball through the cones and then run back with the ball before passing to their next teammate to start their dribbling. Players must pass the ball before crossing the designated cone line.
  • Give ample practice time. Then turn it into a competition. 
    • The first team to have all three players finish the relay and sit in a straight line is the winner!

Coaching Points:

1. Close control while dribbling through the cones

2. Bigger touches when running back to the start

3. Head up to ensure pass is accurate for teammate

4. Use of both feet to increase dribbling speed

5. Encouragement from waiting teammates

6. Ensure pass is made from just after the final cone

4 Cone Dribbling and RWB (20 mins)

Equipment Needed:

  • Cones
  • Soccer balls

Organization:  

4 groups of players.

  • The players must dribble to the cone and then perform a turn of their choice. 
  • Coach show some examples and players can have the freedom to use their own choice.
  • Change the part of the foot to be used during the dribble.
  • Progress to dribbling around in a circuit of all poles.
  • Make it competitive fun.

Coaching Points:

1. Close control while dribbling through the cones

2. Bigger touches when running back to the start

3. Head up to ensure pass is accurate for teammate

4. Use of both feet to increase dribbling speed

5. Encouragement from waiting teammates

6. Ensure pass is made from just after the final cone

  • Cones
  • Soccer balls
Set up:
  • Set up as shown.  Adjust space as needed for age
  • 1st people in line from both sides dribble toward the cones (the defender) and make a move to their right
  • After making the move dribble once or twice, then pass to next person in line
  • After set amount of time have everyone make the same move to the left
