Essence:
Effective drags whilst on the move
Structure:
Players Slalom between the cones shown.
All players start on 1 side (4-5 in each group). Practice for 1-2 mins, then time for 2 minutes, where players count how many gates they can go through as a group.
The group split so half start at either side, and the ball goes back and forth relay style.
Pointers:
Ensure players travel in a zig-zag with a sharp change of direction (not curved running) so they are moving away from a defender.
Players really push off with their back leg as they change direction (this can be done without a ball initially to stress the zig zag and back leg push off).
Variations:
+/- Change distance of the cones from each other to make it a sharper (more difficult) turn, or vice versa

Essence:
Players develop a more effective drag away from defenders reach
Structure:
Set up as previous.
This time player V-drags round cones.
When going to right gate they take the ball to the right of the right gate, drag it back through the gate and accelerate away to the left. This is mirrored on the left gates, dragging the ball the other way.
Pointers:
The bigger and faster the drag the better.
Ball is never stationary during the drag.
Push left elbow out to ensure a smoother drag from left to right, and right elbow out on right to left drag.
Variations:
+ Add lift on at end of drag if possible and accelerate away.
+ Ask players to keep moving forwards throughout the drag (more experienced players)

Set up as previous.
This time player rolls out at the gate.
Essence: Playes use their body as a shield to protect the ball and keep away from defender
Structure:
When going to right hand gates player turns off their right shoulder on reverse stick, and on left gate off their left shoulder on open stick.
Pointers:
Accelerate away after skill.
Stick stays on the ball throughout the skill
Variations:
+ For more experienced progress onto a spin - same process but player turns in a much tighter circle and doesn't move backwards with the ball at all.

- Begin in small sided games (4-5 a side in a shortened 25) to give players lots of touches and chances to put the retention skills to practice in a game.
- Remind players that the skills practiced are to keep the ball out of contact (reach) from the defender
- Ensure players stay calm and don't panic when on the ball
- Ensure players make the right decisions - if there is a simple pass on they give it, if there is space to dribble into they do it, if neither of the above then they use the tight skills we just practiced to create some time and space on the ball.
- Reward a successful drag, spin or roll out as practiced earlier with a point/goal for each team.

Drag Test (15 mins)
Essence:
Developing players drags and control of the ball
Structure:
Players have a ball each and set 2 cones 1m apart.
Drag the ball from one cone to the other using forehand and backhand.
Pointers:
- Ensure players can 'check the time' (if they were wearing a watch they should be able to read the time, to ensure they have correct grip)
- left hand does the twisting and stick twists through the right hand.
- Ball out in front, encourage players to keep glancing forwards then back to the ball to allow vision
- Players body weight rocks with the ball from side to side
Variations:
+ Progress on to figure of 8 round the cones (v-drag), and add in foot movement with the ball with older and more experienced players.
+ Also progress to going to 1 hand at extension on both sides (left hand on left and right on right), and move the cones to 1.5-2m apart.
+ Time players for 30 seconds-1 minute while they count how many drags they make.
