Specific

Principle of play: Defending the switch - Understand when and how to stop a switch of play based on the pressure applied by the defending team

Organization:

Space: 70m x 40m (common players outside the lines) with 2 big goals

Time: 4x 5 min sets with 2 min rest between

Blue is the focus team and red is the opposition. Both teams are set up in a 4-3-3 formation with the common players acting as Full Backs and Wingers for both teams.

Explanation:

Game with GK + 6 vs 6 + GK + 2 common players. Opposition team red tries to switch the field as much as possible while the focus team blue wants to defend the switch and score on the transition.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Targets: The goals are the target. Team that scores more wins.

Conditions: 1) If red team scores by switching the play from one common player to the other their goal counts as double, otherwise it counts only as 1.

2) Blue is the focus team, they can use the common players in possession but they don't need to switch the play but their attacks can only last 8 seconds but their goals count double.

Challenges: 1) The coach first manages the opposition to try to switch through the center of midfield that way the focus team can improve the aspect of preventing the switch through the center of the field

2) The next problem the coach can create is by managing the opposition to switch by going backwards to the center backs and then going to the other side.

3) Last problem the coach creates is the red team switching from one common player to the other via a long driven cross

Key Points:

Out of possession (focus team blue):

Defend as a compact unit

Leave furthest player when ball is on one side

Make play predictable by marking key players and only leave open less dangerous player for the switch

Pressure/ cover

Speed and angle of the press

Shift quickly after a long switch

In possession (opposition team blue - managed):

Make pitch big

Speed of play

Switch in as few passes as possible

SSG

Principle of play: Defending the switch - Understand when and how to stop a switch of play based on the pressure applied by the defending team

Organization:

Space: 75m x 40m + a 10 m zone on each side for the wide players

Time: 3x 8 min sets with 3 min rest in between

Blue is the focus team and red is the opposition. Both teams are set up in a 4-3-3 formation with blue missing their Full Backs while red missing their Wingers.

Explanation:

Game of GK + 8v8 + GK SSG. If the red team can score a goal after a switch from one area to the other the goal counts double, otherwise it only counts as 1. Blue have 10 seconds to score after they win the ball for the goal to count double otherwise their attack cannot last more than 15 seconds.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Targets: Goals are the targets. Team that scores more wins.

Conditions:  1) If the red team can score a goal after a switch from one area to the other the goal counts double, otherwise it only counts as 1.

2) Blue have 8 seconds to score after they win the ball for the goal to count double otherwise their attack cannot last more than 12 seconds.

Challenges: 1) Higher press from blue team, to not allow the first pass wide.

2) Lower block from blue, they allow the first pass wide then they try to win the ball while red is trying the switch.

Key Points:

Out of possession (focus team blue):

Defend as a compact unit

Leave furthest player when ball is on one side

Make play predictable by marking key players and only leave open less dangerous player for the switch

Pressure/ cover

Speed and angle of the press

Shift quickly after a long switch

In possession (opposition team blue - managed):
