Transition Part 1 (2v1)

TRANSITION 1:

2v1

Equipment Needs:

> 2 Small Goals, 1 Full Size Goal

> 6 Mannequins (Training Stakes will work as well)

> Balls (enough to get through multiple rounds of two balls per round)

> 2 colors of vests (Enough to create 2 teams of whatever numbers you have)

> 6 cones (3 of one color, 3 of another)

> 12-20 players

Space Needs:

> 1 rectangle of 20 L X 30 W (2v1 Grid)

> 1 rectangle of 30 L X 30 W (3v2+GK Grid)

Set-Up:

In the first grid, the initial defensive player (1) will start between the 2 mannequins set up about 8-10 yards apart in the middle of the 1st Grid (20L X 30W). These mannequins act as the offside line in the first grid.

2 players from the initial attacking team will start on cones placed on either side of one of the small-sided goals located at the ends of the 20Lx30w grid. Which ever goal they are next to will be the one they are defending if the 1 defender wins the ball and counter-attacks. The goal at the far end of the 20Lx30W field will be the goal the 2 initial attacking players will try to score on.

Instructions:

Once the ball is played in by the coach, the 2 initial attacking players are to simply beat the 1 defending player through combination play or direct to the small-sided goal on the other side of the grid. It is their decision on how to attack the defender. If the defender wins the ball, they can counter attack the opposite goal to see if they can score.

The players cannot be beyond the mannequins until a ball is played beyond them or they dribble past.

Coaching Points/Questions:

For the Attackers:

  • Upon receiving the initial pass from the coach, can they identify the defenders positioning and the best way to attack the space?

  • Can they make quick, decisive decisions to get past the defender and score as quickly as possible?

  • Are they incorporating their teammate in the best optimal way?

For the Defender:

  • Are they cutting off the primary passing lane to keep both players visible?

  • Are they closing the field by pushing the attacker with the ball to one side of the field?

  • Is their body positioning in a manner as to t rack back to the second attacker if need be?

  • Are the delaying enough so that in a real match, support can help?

  • Can they score quickly on the counter if they win the ball?

Transition 2 (2v1 3v2+GK)

TRANSITION 2:

3v2+GK Transition to Counter Attack

Equipment Needs:

> 2 Small Goals, 1 Full Size Goal

> 6 Mannequins (Training Stakes will work as well)

> Balls (enough to get through multiple rounds of two balls per round)

> 2 colors of vests (Enough to create 2 teams of whatever numbers you have)

> 6 cones (3 of one color, 3 of another)

> 12-20 players

Space Needs:

> 1 rectangle of 20 L X 30 W (2v1 Grid)

> 1 rectangle of 30 L X 30 W (3v2+GK Grid)

Set Up:

In the first grid, the initial defensive player (1) will start between the 2 mannequins set up about 8-10 yards apart in the middle of the 1st Grid (20L X 30W). 2 players from the initial attacking team will start on cones placed on either side of one of the small-sided goals located at the ends of the 20Lx30w grid. Which ever goal they are next to will be the one they are defending if the 1 defender wins the ball and counter-attacks.

The Second Grid is separated by 4 more mannequins that act as a back four / offside line for the second progression of the drill. At the end of that grid is a full size goal, and a Goalkeeper.

Instructions:

Building immediately on the first progression of the drill, as soon as the 2v1 ends. Whether it is a goal, or the ball goes out of play, the coach will then play the ball into one of the two player waiting on the corner cones that is the teammates of the original defender.

At that point, the 2 attacking players from the first progression, will immediately turn and become the defending players of the Goalkeeper at the end of Grid 2.

The original defender, will join the two attacking players coming on the field from the corners, and make it a 3v2+GK counter attack situation going at the full-size goal.

The 4 mannequins in place will act as the 4 backs / offside line for this part of the progression. An attacking player cannot be beyond the mannequins unless the ball is already played, dribbled across, or one of the defending players has already backed up beyond the mannequins, establishing a new offside line.

The 3 attackers will then try to score on the Goalkeeper in the Full-size goal, while the defenders try to win it and score on one of the two small-sided goals used in the first progression.

Once a goal is scored for either the attacking team or the defending teams, or the ball goes out of play. All new players are set to start it again.

Coaching Points:

From the Attacking perspective:

  • Are the attacking players looking to counter quickly into advanced space, or do they have to relax and create a rhythm to create a chance?

  • Are their runs offside?

  • What types of runs can they make to be more productive quickly before the defense can slow momentum and allow for help?

  • Can they finish?

From the Defensive perspective:

  • Based on which corner the coach plays the ball to, and where the attacking players are after the first progression, are they transitioning to defenses positions quickly?

  • Who becomes the first and second defender?

  • Is the first defender pushing the players with the ball correctly to make the field smaller?

  • Is the keeper ready to collect a long through ball?

  • How are the defenders switching off based on the passes made?
