Technical Activity (15 mins)

In a grid split the players into two groups. One group is inside the grid and the other group is spread around the outside of the grid. The players around the outside have a ball at their feet, and the inside players do not. For 60 seconds, the inside group checks to a player on the outside, receives a pass, and passes it back to the same person. Then they’ll find a new person on the outside to repeat the sequence. This continues for one minute. Switch the groups.

Techniques to work on:

  • Right foot only two touch
  • Left foot only two touch
  • Receive with one foot pass with the other
  • Give & Go (switch so players on the inside have the ball
    • Approach from an angle
    • Accelerate after your pass
    • Return pass in front of runner so they don't have to slow down
  • Overlaps (switch so the players inside have the ball for this one)
    • Pass to an outside player then get around them and back into the grid to receive the ball
    • Approach from an angle
    • Accelerate through overlap
    • Return the pass in front of the runner into space

Coaching Points:

  • Proper passing/receiving technique
  • Movement into space that’s helpful
  • Play the pass in front of your teammate so he/she does not have to stop to receive the ball
  • Communication (both verbal and non-verbal) about where you want the pass played

2v1 to end zones (15 mins)

Set Up: Use a grid approximately  25*20 with a 5 yard end zone at each end. Teams get a point by passing or dribbling into the end zone.

Split the kids into two teams (or three even groups) and have each team on opposite ends of the field. The game is initiated by one team passing the ball into the second team. The team receiving the ball will send two players and the defending team will only send one player. At this point the three kids on the field will play 2v1.

Be sure to switch sides so that both teams get a chance to attack and defend.

Progression: Team of two can only score by playing teammate into the end zone. If teammates is standing in the end zone before ball is played they are offside. We want to force the players to learn how to weigh a pass and play into space.

Coaching Points:

  • What do you think you should do when you first receive the ball with space? Dribble at the defender to make them come towards the ball creating space behind them
  • When can you do a give & go? When the defender comes towards the ball leaving space behind them. Play the ball to my teammate and they give it back to me as i get past the defender
  • How do you do a give & go? Pass then accelerate into space to eliminate defender; teammate will need to play pass in front of runner
  • When is it a good time to do an overlap? When my teammate dribbles more towards the middle/inside of the field
  • Where do you want to play the pass to your teammate that overlaps, in front of them or directly to them? In front of them
  • What do you do if the defender follows your teammate after they make an overlapping run? Dribble because you have space
  • What can you do if you make an overlapping run but you weren't able to get the ball? Make a diagonal run to create a better angle to get the ball

3v3 Outta Here (20 mins)

Set Up: Use a grid approximately 35*25 with a 7 yard endzone on each end. Play 3v3; teams score by passing or dribbling into the endzone. When the ball goes out, three new players for each team enter the field. Teams are not allowed to defend inside the endzone.

Progression: Teams can only score by passing into the endzone. If teammate is in the endzone before ball is played they are considered offside.

Coaching Points:

  • What are some combinations you could do to get past defenders? Give & go, overlaps
  • When can you do a give & go? When the defender comes towards the ball leaving space behind them
  • When is it a good time to do an overlap? When my teammate dribbles more towards the middle/inside of the field
  • Should your pass go directly to where the runner is or in front of them? In front of them, so they don't have to stop to receive the ball
  • If you don’t get the pass right away can you find a new run to make? maybe a diagonal run
  • What can you do if you have the ball with a lot of space? Dribble into space

Scrimmage 7v7 (20 mins)

Scrimmage 7v7.

Allow the players to play but look for opportunities within the flow of the game for players to implement give & goes, diagonal runs or overlaps. We can even stop the play and show players good times they can use the combinations they have been learning.
