Key Factors
The red players in the boxes are right/left backs (2&3), central midfielders (8&10) and wingers (7&11).
The blue players in the boxes are full backs and centre midfielders...also 1 in each.
Blue players defending the large goal (CB's) cannot engage until the red player has successfully dribbled out of the small boxes
Key Points
- Can the red players look to utilise the extra player quickly
- Movement off the ball/rotation
- The player initially on the ball commit the first defender then make a decision
When in the final third:
- Speed of decisions - pass/dribble/shoot?
- Variation in runs - not running in straight lines
- Striker occupying the defender
- Driving forward with the ball to commit the first player

Welsh Way Principles.
When and how to exploit a numerical advantage, player movement to crate the overload, find the spare player when possible, interchange positions, commit the opponent, ball speed.
Pitch size & Organisation.
Area size 75 x 50 yrds, With a taper at one end.
2 full size goal,
Balls & Bibs
8 vs 7 outfield players and 2 goalkeepers. ( Keeping an overload so that we can get across the session principles)
4 x 5 min blocks.
Players will be organised as shown on the diagram
The blue number 10 will now become their striker.
Head coach - Coaching the RED team
Red team objectives.
- When and how to exploit the numerical advantage,
- Player movement to create the overloads
- Find the spare player,
- Interchange positions,
- Commit the opponent,
- Ball speed.
Assistant coach - Managing the Blue team
Blue team objectives.
- Recognise opposition movement,
- Press quickly whilst protecting the middle of the pitch,
- Leave the furthest player.
Explanation.
Free play game, continuing to work on the specific session principles of creating and exploiting the overload
Previous points will be reminded to the players throughout.
To allow the session to have a form of realism if the blue team score a goal they will then start from there goalkeeper.
But to keep the principles of the session in mind the blue team if they recover the ball will have a limited time (coaches discretion) to score a goal.
Progressions / Regression.
If the reds are having to much success add another blue player to the session.
Challenges, conditions and targets.
Can the red goalkeeper play wide to increase the distance for the blue striker to recover.
When attacking down one wing can the opposite full back stay high and wide to create the overloads on both sides of the pitch.
If the blues are managed to press high then the keeper can play over the top into the spaces left in wide areas.
- Full backs (2&3) will be encouraged to get on the ball and drive forward
- As they commit the first player they should have an overload in that wide area very similar to the specific drill
- Players will need to commit the players out wide fast to allow for more success. If they do not do it quick enough it will allow the defending players more of an opportunity to move across and cover.
- Be patient on the ball, if the overload is not on then be patient and move the ball until it is
- Take only the touches you need not want when in possession.Interventions

Coaching positions.
Head coach could start on position A and assistant coach could start on position B. Although through the practice they will rotate around the pitch to positions C & D.
The head coach may also enter the field of play to get another view of the game or to offer concurrent feedback on both positive and negative aspects of the session.
Or walk throughs to explain any situations that need addressing.

Specific - Exploiting overloads (10 mins)
Welsh Way Principles.
When and how to exploit a numerical advantage, player movement to crate the overload, find the spare player when possible, interchange positions, commit the opponent, ball speed.
Pitch size & Organisation.
Area size 60 x 50 yrds, with 2 marked out boxes of 15 x 15 yrds (as shown with shaded area)
1 full size goal,
2 mini goals set on the halfway line,
7 vs 7 outfield players and a goalkeeper.
Balls & Bibs
2 x 5 min blocks.
Players will be organised as shown on the diagram

Assistant coach - Managing the Blue team
Blue team objectives.
- Recognise opposition movement,
- Press quickly whilst protecting the middle of the pitch,
- Leave the furthest player.
Explanation.
Blue team will be setup with a goalkeeper and 2 defenders, then two blues in each of the boxes and the Blue number 10 on the halfway line.
Red team will be set up with 3 players in each box and a striker (number 9) who will play against the two defenders and the goalkeeper.
Play will begin with the blue number 10 on the halfway line. He will play the ball into either of the boxes to one of the red players (alternating the box every time). The blue number 10 will then make a recovery run into the box he plays into. The reds have to use the numerical advantage (3v2) as quickly as possible as the recovering defender will make it a 3v3.
The red players need to make 4 continuous passes. If the red players manage to do this the person to receive the 4th pass then leaves the box area they now attack the big goal, joining the red striker. 1 red player joins in from the opposite box to make it a 3v2 against the blue defenders (excluding the goalkeeper).
If the blues win the ball back in the small boxes they have to try and score in the mini goals on the halfway line. If the blues win the ball back when defending the big goal they have to play the ball into the blue number 10. Who after pressing in the small box retreats back to the halfway line quickly ready for the counter attack pass.
Progressions / Regression.
- If the reds have limited success in the small box area, the session will be changed so the blue number 10 does not make his recovery run.
- Allow more defenders and attackers to join the attack at goal.
Challenges, conditions and targets.
- Can the reds score as quickly as possible (time limit)
- Can the attackers take the touches they need not want when there in the small boxes or when attacking the goal.
- Reds will get 1 goal for 4 completed passes in the small box
- Reds will get 2 goals for scoring in the large goal.
- Blues will get 2 goals for scoring in the mini goals when retrieving the ball in the small box
- Blue will get 2 goals for hitting the number 10 on the halfway line when defending the large goal.
