Description

The GK can be used as a pivot when trying to play out from the back with a correct choice of pass the key to starting a phase of play. This drill > SSG session will help to develop a GK's understanding of his passing options and how his tactical positioning in general play can help his team retain possession.

DRILL: ORGANISATION/SET UP (20 mins)

In the 11v11 game both teams will be playing in a 4-4-2 formation

* For this drill i will coach the Yellow team with the wide left & No 9 as manequinns & the red team set up with LSCH & RB as manequinns

* Pitch size: 80 yds split into 1/3rds 30 (def)x25x25 x full width with flat markers marking defensive 1/3 & half way line marking mid/final 1/3

* 15 balls with yellow GK

Set up/Objective

* Play starts from yellow team GK who takes a goal kick and looks to play out from the back using one of four passing options.

1/ pass to CH

2/ pass to FB

3/ pass to No 10

4/ pass deep lying CM player

* i will concentrate on the GK's decision making and positional play to create a defensive overload which allows my team to retain possession from a goal kick.

* yellow team outfield players have been coached previously on there tactical positioning with an emphasis on being expansive from own goal kicks.

Objectives

* yellow team to play out from back and try and score within 30 second phase of play

* red team have 10 seconds on turn over to try and score

Coaching style

autocratic at first to set the scene > guided discovery

Time

20 mins in 4 x 5 min blocks/ with 1st 5 mins free play to set scene for coaching points

Problem 1/Solution

Problem 1

* when yellow GK chooses passing option 4 to deep lying midfield player > CM player bounces it back as he has been pressed by red CM player and GK passes to a CH who is under pressure and is rushed into clearance resulting in lost possession

Solution

*option 1- As yellow team GK receives bounce pass back from CM player encourage him to use option 2 or 3 to play over the press as risk & reward is too high.

option 2: If red CF presses the GK on the bounce pass return from option 4 then look to clip ball over him to RSCH to retain possession.

Keypoint

* playing out from the back is dependant on technical ability of your GK and defensive players so play to your strengths and limit your weaknesses > daily drills working on triggers and using correct personnel will improve the understanding but only apply in games when your team is confident to do so.

* although this session is based on using the GK as the pivot from a dead ball situation the coaching points are still relative to open play with GK as pivot to create overloads to play out from the back and switch play.

SSG (30 mins)

SSG: 6 x 5 min blocks

* pitch geography the same as drill

* both teams playing 2-4-2 with GK

* play can start from either GK and play is open

* set up at start is 2v2 in defensive 3rd > 4v4 midfield 1/3 & 2v2 final 1/3

Conditions

* 1 yellow player can enter def/final 1/3 from midfield zone to create a 3v2 overload in both areas to help build GK confidence

block 1: GK must play 1st pass to a CH to start phase of play

block 2: GK can start play with pass to CH or deep lying CM player

block 3: Gk can start play with any of the 4 passing options from the drill

blocks 4: GK + 3 players in defensive 1/3 (4v2) must have 5 passess before they can play through through 1/3rds

blocks 5/6: open play with all zones open

Keypoints

* encourage your GK to play quickly when ball goes out of play for restart as this will allow more time and space for player receiving pass.

* coach GK to play pass into space when possible to trigger an attack

* playing with the GK as a pivot when playing out from the back is based on risk & reward with safety always the first option if GK is unsure.

Progression/Regression

* you can reduce players on opposition side if you want to build confidence or if drill/ssg keeps breaking down eg 1 striker pressing in defensive 1/3 to allow GK to play out more easily

Problem 2/Solution

Problem 2

* in blocks 4 & 5 when the play and zones are open the yellow GK stays deep and central when we win the ball back in the mid 1/3 > the pass back to use GK as a pivot has to travel further which allows opposition to set for press on next pass and prevents a quick switch of play

Solution

* encourage GK to have higher starting position in general play when we have possession and to be slightly off centre on same side of ball > this will allow him to be used as a pivot to switch play on opposite side (create overloads) and reduce time for opponents to get the shift and become organised.
