Moment: OP in M3.
Objective: From protect, teach MFs when to Press.
Organization (5 - 12 players): 2v2+1, 2v2+2, 3v3+1, 3v3+2, 4v4+1, 4v4+2. MFs "protect" center channel.
Coaching Points: Protect - Goalside compact, Press, Cover. Press - no stab or overrun. Cover - off press shoulder, deny forward pass (to goal). Cue to Press: When ball is passed back to CB. Cue 2: If 1st Attacker turns back to goal. What is a press? 1st defender gets within arm length of ball, ideally makes contact. 2nd defenders deny forward passing lanes. Communicate and stay organized. Move as a unit.

1v1 in Defensive 3rd
Organization :Seediagram. Two teams.
Lesson 1: Who are the best defenders – smartest,fastest, …? Smart, aggressive, work hard, communicate.
Lesson 2:What is difference between Stab / Dive and Tackle?
Stab: Any movement that takes you off balance / past the attacker. Typically attempted prior to applying any pressure. Body is NOT over ball.
Tackle: Use foot to stop ball. Body will beover ball. Pressure, then tackle.
Lesson 3:When can you tackle? 1) When body is over ball. 2) When attacker makes a mistake. 3) When they turn their back to goal.
Lesson 4: What is “goalside”? Whenyou are between ball and goal. Get goalside, then steer attacker towardssideline / away from goal. Do NOT overplay the ball (get & stay goalside). Demo this to team.
Lesson 5: What is the proper defensive stance?Side on (hips turned), knees bent, feet moving quickly & alternating. (smallsteps), balls of feet. Arms out for balance.
Game 1: Attackerstarts with ball. Attacker scores point if they can control ball in shadedbox (diagram). Defender scores point if they can a) force ball out AWAY fromGoal (yellow cones / top 18 yd box) or b) dispossess ball andpass back to their line. Add / remove “no tackle” condition as needed.
Game 2: Defenderstarts with ball, passes to attacker. Attacker scores 1 point if they can scorea goal. Defender scores point same as Game 1.
Coaching Points: “I GOT BALL”. Get goal side (C-Shape) and staygoal side, pressing defender away from goal. Apply immediate pressure: Close down space quickly and controlled (nooverrun). Side on (hips turned), knees bent, feet moving quickly &alternating. (small steps), balls of feet. “I got ball”. No Stabbing (1 pushup)..
