1v1 in Defensive 3rd

Organization :Seediagram. Two teams.

Lesson 1: Who are the best defenders – smartest, fastest, …? Smart, aggressive, work hard, communicate.

Lesson 2:What is difference between Stab / Dive and Tackle?

Stab: Any movement that takes you off balance / past the attacker. Typically attempted prior to applying any pressure. Body is NOT over ball.

Tackle: Use foot to stop ball. Body will beover ball. Pressure, then tackle.

Lesson 3:When can you tackle? 1) When body is over ball. 2) When attacker makes a mistake. 3) When they turn their back to goal.

Lesson 4: What is “goalside”? Whenyou are between ball and goal. Get goalside, then steer attacker towardssideline / away from goal. Do NOT overplay the ball (get & stay goalside). Demo this to team.

Lesson 5: What is the proper defensive stance?Side on (hips turned), knees bent, feet moving quickly & alternating. (smallsteps), balls of feet. Arms out for balance.

Game 1: Attackerstarts with ball. Attacker scores point if they can control ball in shadedbox (diagram). Defender scores point if they can a) force ball out AWAY fromGoal (yellow cones / top 18 yd box)  or b) dispossess ball andpass back to their line. Add / remove “no tackle” condition as needed.

Game 2: Defenderstarts with ball, passes to attacker. Attacker scores 1 point if they can scorea goal. Defender scores point same as Game 1.

Coaching Points: “I GOT BALL”. Get goal side (C-Shape) and staygoal side, pressing defender away from goal. Apply immediate pressure: Close down space quickly and controlled (nooverrun). Side on (hips turned), knees bent, feet moving quickly &alternating. (small steps), balls of feet. “I got ball”. No Stabbing (1 pushup)..
