Practice Set Up
Area size half 9v9 pitch (split into zones as shown)
2 greens in midfield zone and attacking zone and 1 defending blue in the central area
[practice area and player numbers can be varied depending on availability and ability level]
Practice starts by the coach playing a ball to a green player. Green players pass and move in their own zone to create space for a longer pass to the attacking end zone - to start with this pass must be along the floor. The Blue player in the middle zone tries to screen passes and intercept as the longer pass is made.
If the ball is successfully played into the attacking end zone, attacking player has a 1 touch finish. Alternatively set up a safe zone which attacking players cannot shoot in (to protect GK)
Progressions
Allow defender to recover into attacking end zone to put pressure on shot
Allow a midfield green player to enter defensive zone (zone blue player is in) to provide support behind the ball.
Key factors
Can defender intercept pass or screen away from central area
Anticipation/decisive movement
Quick footwork
Forcing play
Challenges
Can you try to screen passes (get in the way of)
Can you try to anticipate where the pass from one end to the other might be played
Can to try to force play in a particular direction (make play predictable)
