Session Objective | in this session, I aim to improve our players' ability to create and attack space behind an opposing player who is pressing from in front. Tactically, players will be challenged to solve problems using 1v1 skills when playing out from the back.
Coaches, aim to keep coaching points short & simple. Go in, deliver your point, affect the players on the ball, around the ball and away from the ball then get out. As often as possible look to coach on the run and let them play, however, if play needs to be stopped during tactical component and skill game, then address problems as follows: -
spot problem | stop play | correct using demonstration, guided discover and q&a | play is live off my touch "and we play".

Frame
Ball manipulation, and mastery, with passive opposition in front.
Explanation
In 20x5 / 20x10 areas; players in groups of 3 set up as shown in the diagram. To begin, two players at one end, one player at the opposite end. Ball starts with the two, they play it to the team mate opposite and press the ball immediately (passive - no tackling). The player who receives must fake to evade pressure using:-
1. Inside drag / outside push (drop shoulder).
2. Inside drag / scissor / outside push (drop shoulder + fake).
Coaching Points
+ positive attitude to attack space quickly.
+ be believable and exaggerate fakes.
+ invite pressure to destroy pressure.
+ keep the ball close, soft touches - drive quickly when there is space to exploit.
+ change speed, direction & tempo.
+ aim to execute skills at match speed.

Frame
Individual technique with a focus on reinforcing good habits and encouraging the use of 1v1 skills to play out from the back.
Explanation
Players complete the following sequences in groups of four (this allows for a good work:rest ratio): -
A. ONE-TWO | ball is played out to the wide player, starting player follows their pass to the wide cone; wide player takes a positive first touch FWD and accelerates towards the cone before executing a turn. Wide player then plays a one-two with the starting player before dribbling through gate to rest; team mates repeat the exercise.
B. DRIVEN PASS | ball is played out to the wide player, starting player follows their pass to the wide cone; wide player takes a positive first touch FWD and accelerates towards the cone before executing a turn. Wide play then hits driven pass to a team mate standing behind the gate and finishes by sprinting to take their position. Team mate receiving takes a positive first touch away from pressure and the exercise is repeated.
C. RUN WITH BALL | ball is played out to the wide player, starting player follows their pass to the wide cone; wide player takes a positive first touch FWD and accelerates towards the cone before executing a turn and running with the ball through the gates to rest; team mates repeat the exercise.
Coaching Points
+ positive attitude to attack space quickly.
+ aim to execute skills at match speed.
+ positive first touch in the direction you intend to go.
+ keep the ball close, soft touches - drive quickly when there is space to exploit.
+ check shoulders before receiving to see if there is space to drive into.
+ when turning, fake away from the direction you intend to go in order to create space.

Frame
Cues and triggers in 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 situations for when and where it's appropriate to dribble.
Explanation
20x20 area, three balls are placed on cones in each half (approx. 5 yards away from boundary lines). Players are divided into teams of equal numbers and take up a position at a designated cone on the sideline. 1v1 - DEF (blue) passes the ball to ATT (orange) and players cross-over / switch halves ; ATTs must beat DEFs to knock an opposition ball off a cone. The first team to knock all opposition balls off the cones go one-nil up. NB: no shooting at a ball when in your own half.
Progression
1. Players call out a number (1,2 or 3) as they pass the ball to begin the game; "1" = 1v1; "2" = 2v2; "3" = 3v3. All players must cross-over into their own half before they are active.
Variations
1. use goals instead of soccer balls on cones; two goals at opposite ends of the area.
2. use gates instead of soccer balls on cones; two gates at opposite ends of the area.
Coaching Points
Do you have space ahead to exploit? If Yes:
+ positive attitude to attack space ahead quickly.
+ first touch out of feet and in the direction you intend to go.
+ head up to check support from team mates.
+ cues / triggers to exploit space e.g. defender positioned poorly, all weight on one foot.
+ decision-making at appropriate time: dribble - can I commit an opponent 1v1?use feints, changes of direction & stop/starts / pass - can I commit a defender before playing a pass?
+ support play in front of, behind and around the ball carrier.
Do you have space ahead of you to exploit? If No:
+ dribble to switch play or switch play to allow others to dribble i.e. if one player can't dribble because more than one opponent is in front of them, encourage them to switch play to a team-mate who can dribble forward.

Frame
2v2 situation that encourages players to combine or use ball mastery skills to create and attack space behind the opposition.
Explanation
20 x 20 area. One pair passes a ball across to the opposite pair to trigger a 2v2. The receiving pair attempt to beat the defenders and dribble the ball, in control, across the opposition end line. If defenders win possession, they attack the opposite line. Games are played at the same time in both directions. Pairs swap ends after each game, regardless of the result.
Variations
1. two goals at opposite ends of the area; players must dribble across an end line, in control, before they can shoot on goal.
2. two gates at opposite ends of the area; players must dribble through a gate, in control.
3. step-back and play 1v1: same area, rules and scoring system.

Frame
Play out from the back with opposition (3v2) and through the middle third; decision-making in a numbers up situation.
Explanation
Two thirds of a 5-aside pitch with three goals; two bazooka goals at one end for the ATK team to score into / one large goal and GK (coach) at the opposite end for the DEF team to counter-attack and score. 3v2: ATK team set-up as GK-2-1. GK plays a ball to an ATK player to initiate an attack. Ensure that both teams are afforded the opportunity to plays as ATKs and DEFs.
Progression
4v3: ATK team set-up as GK-1-2-1. GK plays a ball to an ATK player to initiate an attack.
NB: if competent, extend the defensive zone to the full two-thirds to challenge players to play out from the back with game realistic pressure.
Coaching Points
+ Cue/trigger: as soon as the GK has possession of the ball, this is a signal for two ATKs to go wide, face inwards on the half turn and show for the ball. The 3rd ATK now has a choice to drop into the space in the middle to receive OR to stretch the field by pinning one defender as far back as possible, allowing team mates to play 2v1 out from the back.

Frame
Ball manipulation, and mastery, in tight space; exploit space quickly when it's available.
Explanation
Two 10x10 squared areas. 5 players in each square. All players dribble unopposed inside the area as the coach challenges them to complete various ball mastery skills when space is limited.
Ball mastery skills
1. Dynamic toe tap variations (coach holds up fingers, player call out number).
2. Sole rolls.
3. V pushes (drag/push).
"you might be thinking why are we doing this, but no matter what age you are, being able to manipulate the ball in tight areas is so, so important - we're seeing loose touches here; it's very much about reducing those".
4. Scissors; now, let's take it on the move just one or two and move.
5. Cruyff turn; both feet / arm up / exaggerate hip rotation.
6. L turn; both feet, outside push away. Check shoulders before.
7. Inside + Outside cuts.
Progression
1. Spatial awareness: when space between two players becomes available, challenge players to drive quickly through gaps, towards the area boundary, before executing a turn. Repeat. Players score points for each successful completion.
2. Evading pressure: one player in each square is given a bib to hold - this players dribbles and avoids the other 4 chasers inside the area. Chasers attempt to bump the dribbler's ball with their own. Dribbler tries to find pockets of space to exploit and keep their ball alive. Once their ball is bumped or they leave the area, pass the bib to a new player and go again. NB: no striking at the dribblers ball, must dribble to bump.
Coaching Points
+ awareness of ball, space and opposition.
+ plenty of soft touches, close control.
+ accelerate quickly into space.
+ tight area, so if defenders are trying to set a trap - creativity and cleverness can set you free.
+ if we move the ball but stay in the same area, what might the defenders do? block you in and set a trap.
+ once you set with the ball, defenders will get compact. That's your cue to create a little chaos. Stop, stand them up, then move quickly into new space.
+ be unpredictable.
+ change speed, direction & tempo.
+ aim to execute skills at match speed.
