Set up as a phase of play. The drill involves working on the defensive back 4,2 central midflieders and a striker 4-2-1. Opposition comprises 2 forwards the midfield 4 and 2 full backs plus a server and 2 targets
Progression include defensive wide midfielders
Drill
The ball is played by the server to the full back then out to wide to RM/LM or through the middle to either CM. Let the play run for a few minutes to observe how the players react. If the ball goes out of play normal rules apply, but no corners
Key Factors
Ensure the drill is carried out a fast tempo and attacking players are positive and realistic.
The whole shape of the defence is decided by the actions of the nearest player. If they decide to press the attacker withe ball, the rest of the defence must react accordingly. Communication is essential and must start from the GK,progressing through the team.
See above the ball has been played to the attacking right midfielder. The defender LB decided to press the player in possession, so the CB and most importantly the RB have to move across and ensure a good defensive shape.
The 2 defending CM must drop and screen the 2 attacking Forwards, but also look to cover the attacking CM can the other defending CM drop in front of the 2 forwards to attempt to intercept any passes to the (F)
The defending (F) should drop to provide cover and balance in the midfield and therefore become the player that can apply pressur to the 2 attacking CM should the ball be played to them.
If either CM make an attacking runs into the final third, then the defending CM must look to track this run all the way to ensure the attackers do not become undefended in the danger areas.
The FB furthest from play must deal with any balls played to the back post. His bod postion must be open, keeping both the ball and the opposition in view.
If the nearest defender presses when the ball is played into feet of either (F) the remaing 3 must close up,maintaining defensive balance
If the ball is won can it be played out with control to the targets
(GK) be a voice at the back can you play as a sweeper
