Set Up

In this formation we play with a GK and 3 Centre backs who focus their defending on the width of the box.

There is a right and left wing back who help support the defence and attack.

The midfield is set up as a diamond and there is one striker.

CBs

Our 3 Centre Backs need to make sure they slide across the pitch quickly to keep the spaces between them close, forcing our opponents wide or back, but not allowing space to play through.

The Central Centre Back is slightly deeper than the other CBs.

When playing out from a goal kick the two wider CBs split as usual and the Central CB moves slightly to one side.

Wing Backs 1

In this diagram the Right Wing Back has moved forward to support the play high up the pitch. The left wing back should hold a position in line with the CDM. This means that if play breaks down they can recover quickly and if we need the Left Wing Back to push on they are already creeping forwards.

The RWB would then drop back, as shown in the diagram.

Wing Backs 2

There may be times where the Wing Back cannot get high enough to support the play in a wide position and a rotation needs to occur. In the diagram the ball has been passed from the RWB to the CDM. Because the LWB cannot make the run in time (they may be tired or have just made a recovery run) so the Left Centre Mid will rotate to become the wide man, and the LWB can support behind, and inside.

CDM

As mentioned, we want our diamond to rotate when the time is right, like in futsal. This will help confuse our opponents but it is also important to make sure we always have defensive cover.

In this diagram our CDM receives the ball back from the RCM and the CDM drives forward, overtaking the CMs. The LCM is the closest player and drops in to CDM to ensure we have security if we are counter attacked.

Attackers

In this diagram the Striker has pulled to the edge of the box (don't go any wider!). This then leaves us without a Striker, so the CAM takes this position in the middle. The LCM also sees space to move forward towards the back of the box. You will also notice as the ball is on the right that the RWB has moved forward to support.

Another rotation might be that the ball is played into the Striker (who stays in the middle) the ball is then set back to the CAM who plays the ball to the RCM who has made a forward run into the same position picked out by the Striker in this diagram (at the side of the box).
