Warm Up Part 1 (5 mins)

Organization and Set Up:

  • Different fast feet movement in and out of the cone. e.g. forward & back, fast feet moving sideways, fast feet facing forward etc.
  • The feeder kicks the ball around the GKs chest, each time GK completes fast feet movements, GK catches the ball and passes it back to the feeder once they have done both sets of cones and fought the ball they join the back of the line.

Teaching Points:

  • Weight forward on your toes, staying low
  • Hand-eye coordination 
  • The correct catching technique (hands in either a W or Dimond shape with thumbs together) out in front.
  • Correct body position and shape
  • Fast feet and lateral movements

Warm Up Part 2 (5 mins)

Organization and Set Up:

  • Get into pairs, one inside colored cones square the other feeding
  • Will switch with your partner every 30 seconds. each partner will do each progression once.
  • The square is around 5 yards in size.

Playing the Game:

  • The feeder will shout a colored cone, GK will touch it get back into the middle of the square, and catch the ball that is being kicked at them around chest height.
  • The feeder will shout a colored cone, GK will go around it gets back into the middle of the square, and catch the ball that is being kicked at them around chest height.
  • The feeder will shout 2 colored cones, GK will touch them both gets back into the middle of the square and catch the ball that is being kicked at them around chest height.
  • The feeder will shout a colored cone, GK will touch it, and as they touch it the feeder will throw the ball around waist height into the middle of the square, the GK has to react quickly to dive and catch it.
  • The feeder will shout a colored cone, GK will touch it, and as they touch it the feeder will kick the ball on the ground into the middle of the square, the GK has to react quickly to dive and catch it or control it with their feet and pass back.
  • Mix the different passes so they don't know what to expect.

Teaching Points:

Functional Four Goal Game (15 mins)

Four Goal Game Organization: (15 minutes)

Organization and Set Up:

  • Four mini-soccer goals are placed in a diamond formation approx. 8-10 yards apart.
  • One goalkeeper in each goal, 
  • Positioned between each pair of goals are color-coded gates, with two balls and a server in each.

Playing the Game:

  • Each GK defends their own specific goal.
  • The coach calls out a specific color that player attempts to score in any of the four goals with one of the two balls in their possession.
  • GKs quickly take up a position relative to the position of that particular ball and react accordingly to defend their goal by choosing and using the relevant save technique.
  • If the ball rebounds off the GK and stays within the area of play, then the nearest GK to the ball can rebound the ball 1st time into any of the other three goals.

Progressions:

  • Add another player into the Centre of the playing area, and the ball can be played into that player, who can then attempt to score in any of the four goals or rebound the ball should it rebound off any of the goalkeepers during the practice.
  • If GK secures the ball, they can throw it into any of the other goals or drop it to the ground and strike the first time into any plan.

Distribution (15 mins)

Distribution:

Using short passes and throws to gain accuracy.

Organization and Set Up:

  • A third of a pitch
  • 4 Mini Goals
  • Cones
  • Gate

Playing the Game:

  • GK comes forward through the gate (poles) to receive a pass from any of the 3 feeders.
  • GK then passes it back to the feeder.
  • GK drops in to receive a backpass.
  • GK takes the first touch through the colored gate on either side of the gate and passes it into one of the mini goals.
  • Once GK has received feeds from all sides they rotate clockwise and join the back of that team's line. GK > Black, Black > Pink, Pink > Red, Red > GK
Progression 1:
  • GK comes forward through the gate (poles) to receive a volley from any of the 3 feeders.
  • GK then rolls it back to the feeder.
  • GK drops in to receive a backpass.
  • GK takes the first touch through the colored gate on either side of the gate and throws it into one of the mini goals.
  • Once GK has received feeds from all sides they rotate clockwise and join the back of that team's line. GK > Black, Black > Pink, Pink > Red, Red > GK
Progression 2:
  • GK receives a pass or a volley from any of the 3 feeders. 
  • Their partner runs in to become a striker trying the steal the ball.
  • GK has to react quickly to pass the ball into one of the goals.
  • Once GK has received feeds from all sides they rotate clockwise and join the back of that team's line. GK > Black, Black > Pink, Pink > Red, Red > GK

Playing the Game:

  • RCB passes into GK, who passes to LCB, LCB plays a ball straight back to GK, GK then plays into CDM who sets back for GK to kick long to the target area (shaded pitch area)
  • Change sides doing the same thing starting from the LCB.
  • Make sure GK is doing a variety of distribution, passing to the different target areas.

Progression:

  • 1 touch passing

Rules:

  • Maximum 2 touch
  • Accurate passing

  • GK's movement 
  • GK position and body shape (open)

  • First touch (in front of you)
  • Target players control from the long ball

  • GK aims to build out from the back (Pink Team)

  • The Reds scoring against GK and Pinks aiming for Mini goals.
