WB's - Defending the Back post in a 3+1

Principles & Session Focus

To help improve the understanding and ability of the WB's to defend the back post in a 3 + 1.

Key Coaching Points and Areas of Focus

  • Timing to drop from the MF line to the back line when the ball passes the MF line
  • Body shape to defend the back post
  • Reading the cross and adjusting to it
  • Technique of defending it or adjusting position
  • Organization and Instructions

The exercise includes 2 different actions in which the WB needs to drop to defend the back post

  • The first action is the WB dropping with the line of the back 3 in order to defend the back post from a deep cross
  • The second action is the WB pushing back up with the MF line and then dropping quickly to defend a narrow cross
