Wall Pass Warm-Up (20 mins)

Organisation:

No.Players 12

Size of Area:

30 yds x 15 yds or 40 yds x 20 yds

Rules:

  • Both teams start with the ball at the GK. Every player has a touch on the ball.
  • Once the ball goes to the player in the end zone, they play the ball back to the player it came from, who then plays a pass into the GK.
  • The GK plays the ball to the blue team who repeats the same process.
  • Depending on skill level, you may have two balls working at the same time increasing repetition and PDE.
  • Both teams are only passively defending, they can not tackle the opposition at this point.
  • Frequently rotate players in and out of the end zones so that they all get used to the technique.

Progression:

  • Because there is traffic in the middle zone, if they successfully get a wall pass as part of the sequence, that counts as a goal.
  • Instead of players on the last pass playing into GK feet, they can try and score on goal.

What to look for:

  • Dependant on pressure, where to take your first touch away from pressure.
  • If there is space around, how do you take your first touch forward.
  • Runs of the supporting player / players (underneath, to the side or beyond).

Coaching Points:

  • When receiving the ball, where is pressure coming from?
  • Where do you take your first touch?
  • What controlling surface (chest, thigh, instep, outstep, sole, toe)?
  • If you have control and balance, can you play into a player first time?
  • If you can’t play first time, how do you protect?

Organisation:

No.Players 12

Size of Area:

30 yds x 15 yds or 40 yds x 20 yds

Rules:

  • Yellow team starts with the ball, they have to try and work the ball in a controlled manner and try to score against the blue team.
  • To score a goal, the attacking team have to combine with end zone player.
  • Once the ball goes into the end zone player, another attacking player can go into that zone to support.
  • If they score a goal, it restarts with yellow team GK, otherwise it restarts with blue team GK
  • If  the blue team win the ball in open play, they become the attacking team and all players must be in their original zones until the blue team get the ball into the attacking zone.
  • Frequently rotate players in and out of the end zones, so that they all get used to the technique.

What to look for:

  • Dependant on pressure, where to take first touch away from the pressure.

Progressions:

  • Because there is traffic in the middle zone, if they successfully get a wall pass as part of the sequence that counts as goal.
