Organisation: Shadow play - team to replicate 1-4-2-3-1 formation - Manikins setup to replicate 1-4-3-3 (as close as possible), The players will work through some uncontested patterns always finishing on a goal
Total time approx. 20mins
Players to be pushed to achieve high tempo of passing and movement, get as close to game speed as possible.
Coaching Points:
Passing - High tempo, accurate passing - can we play to the receiving players correct foot so they can keep the build moving in the correct direction, with as little amount of touches as possible
- take as many touches as you need not as many as you want
- play using correct ball speed, don't over/under hit, with every pass can we learn and tweak and improve to get it right
- be prepared to improvise if the pass or movement isn't quite right, how do we fix the error with breaking the passage of play down, think game realism, do we reset? does the ball need to be played to another player.
- Scanning and awareness - links into the above, always be 2 passes ahead and/or have you a)b)c) option ready before you receive the ball, take 'videos' and be aware of the situation always changing.
- Communication with teammates - how can we help our teammate when playing them the ball. give an instruction? make them aware of who's around them
Push for build of good habits, communication, scanning, not allowing sloppy play and/or slow tempo play

Organisation: 1x manikin, 2 poles and a cone and balls
set up as pictured, approx. space between manikin and poles 10m
Ball starts on cone, player with ball plays to player on cone - player on cones sets ball back to first player who passes to player on right sided pole - that player plays to left sided pole - who then plays back to the player on the cone.
players follow pass.
Coaching Points:
PASS DETAIL
• Players are expected to complete every pass with thecorrect weight and accuracy.• Players must recognise where they want to pass to –back foot or front foot of the receiver.• As the practice progresses, players will have to passinto space in front of the receiver.
MOVEMENT TO RECEIVE
• The coach should encourage the players to make short, sharp movements before they receive the ball, awayfrom the cones and mannequin. This replicates realisticmatch movements.
USING BOTH FEET
• The players should be challenged to pass and receiveusing both feet.• Although this means ball speed may be slower to beginwith, it is essential for player development.
FIRST TOUCH
• Upon receiving, players should take their first touch outof their feet to ensure the next pass is can be playedwithin a maximum of two touches.
FIRST-TIME PASSING
• Where possible, players should attempt to makefirst-time passes to the next player.• These passes should only be attempted if the set backto them is on the floor, with the correct weight.
Progressions:
Second pattern
ball starts on cone, player player to manikin, that player recieves on the turn and plays to right side pole, that players sets one back to player on manikin, they combine around the pole and then play to next pole, then back to player on the cone
reverse playing direction

Organisation: 3 grids approx 20x15- players split into 3 teams - 2 neutral players
Coach plays the ball into one of the end grids - the defending team in the middle grid will send 2 players to attempt to win the ball - attacking team needs to make 5 passes then transition the ball to over grid - if successful the defending team will send 2 players into grid to continue to defend. - neutral player to work in central zone and play for the attacking team
We will work in 2 mins blocks then switch defending team/neutral players
Attacking team aim is to try and play through the lines of the defending team with or without using the neutral players to get the ball from one grid to another
Defending Teams aim is to not actively win the ball, play with a shape, structure and organisation to stop attacking teams from playing through and making split passes
coaching points-
• As players are opposed in a tight area, receiving playersmust have an idea of what they want to do next so thatthey are in control of the ball.
• Encourage the receiving player to take their first touchaway from the pressing defender, or to play off onetouch.
PASSING WITH A PURPOSE
• Players must ensure that every pass – either short orlong – is punched in with purpose along the floor.
• This will increase the chance of maintaining possessionfor longer periods.
PASSING WITH DISGUISE
• All players should be encouraged to use disguisewhen passing, to deceive the opposition.
• Disguised passes are more often seen when anin-possession player is under high pressure.
CREATING A PASSING LINE
• When awaiting the ball from the opposite third, playersshould be constantly adjusting their position in orderto create a passing line. This increases the chances ofmaintaining possession.
Defenders
- How do we keep our structure and force the attackers to play one way
- if we have to concede the switch of play can if be making the attackers play around us rather than through us
- strong direct communication of who applies pressure, who is picking up who and/or passing lanes to cut and where
-move and work as a unit, keep relative space the same, be aggressive to close space but calm on arrival (fast approach slow arrival)
- not necessary trying to win the ball but to make it as hard as possible for the attackers to progress and/or force and error so that they lose possession
Progressions:
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation:
set up a field approx. 45x40 goals at each end - field to be split in to 3 zones, 1 end zone at each end 40x8 with a middle zone
teams to be split in 2 7v7 numbers dependant - corners cut off to encourage play to goal
6v6 in middle zone - 1 attacker from each team in their attacking zone
ball to be played into a team in the middle zone and they become attacking team - goals can only be scored by playing into end zone for attacker to score uncontested (at first) attackers have 3 seconds to score
Task - can attacking team combine and look to play through the defenders lines to find their attacker in the end zone to score
Defending team - can we stay organised and not allow to be split
Coaching Points-
UP, BACK & THROUGH
• Players should support beneath the ball to anticipateany passes set back for them to play forwards.
FINISHING PHASE
• As the attacking players only have a limited amount oftime to control and receive, they should concentrate onbeing composed when finishing. They should not rushtheir shots.
DRIBBLING INTO SPACE
• Recognising chances to dribble into space will createopportunities to play more quickly into the attacker.• Players should also be encouraged to take on 1v1situations in the middle third and attempt to beattheir defender
- Timing of movement off the ball to receive
-structure and organisation
-work as a unit both attack and defence
- through, around or over
-
Progressions:
- defender can go defend the attacker in end zone
- move to free game

warm up/arrival activity
Organisation: The players will begin with their dynamic warms up and then go straight into Rondos to continue activation with the ball
total time approx 15 mins
rondo area approx 12x12
5v2 rondos - rotate central player every 90 seconds x 5 rotations
Coaching Points:
Passing and receiving:
- Focus on quality of passing - ball speed, accuracy of pass, passing to correct foot of receiver
- Receiving quality - Body shape when receiving to play away from pressure, if taking a touch - take it away from pressure, receive using the correct foot to be able to play with next touch, or play one touch
- movement off the ball - creating angles/channels to receive
- are defending working together, can we split them with a pass, can a play drop centrally to disrupt the defenders
Defending
- Work with other defender the cut off grid and isolate player on and nearest the ball to force errors
- punish poor touches, passes
- not allow yourself to be split via a pass
- dictate the way you want to opposition to play - angle body in direction you want them to play, cut off grid, block channels, allow space for the area you want to win the ball in
-quick movement around quick, high pressure on ball, 1 players go and apply pressure, angle body cut off grid and other player prepare to move to where the ball moves next
