Organisation:
6 cones marked out to form a circle, approximately 20m in diameter
12 players - 6 in blue bibs stand at each cone with a ball; 6 in red bibs stand inside the circle
6 balls
Instructions
Players inside the circle approach a player on the outside, who serve the ball underarm, and the player in the circle then volleys the ball back.
Dependant upon how the ball is fed to them, it is up to the players to volley the ball back using either laces or inside of foot. Depends on how their body shape is positioned, they may have to do a side volley. The choice is theirs, using either foot.
The players have a level of variability to manage, and also the contextual interference from the other players who are also moving within the circle. They have to move to a different player and cannot stay with the same feeder.
Players on the inside work for a period of time (approximately 60-90 seconds) before swapping roles.
Coaching points:
As per the blocked drills, but this time more focus is required with the added dimesion of moving quickly within the circle and communicating to the players on the outside and asking for the ball to be fed to them.
Key points:
Communication
Accuracy
Touch / control
Progressions:
- Add a challenge - how many volleys can be completed within 1 min? or, who can be the first to complete 20 volleys?

Organisation
Split players into groups of three.
One player serves underarm to the next player, who volleys to the remaining player, who then serves to the next player in sequence. Repeat.
Aim
To develop players volleying ability.
Instructions
Players must remain on their toes and focussed on the ball. Players need to position themselves so as to be able to direct the ball to the next player. Let the ball come across their body before making contact. Firm ankle.
Progression
Change direction so as to enable the other foot to be used for volleying.

Organisation:
30 x 50 metre pitch marked out with cones and goals at either end
Split players into 2 teams - 6 Red and 6 Blue - spare team in the wings if need be - and rotate teams every 2 mins.
Red team to be coached.
Play commences by coach throwing a ball to any player who must then serve the ball to a team mate.
Instructions
Play moves by throw, volley and then catch.
The person in possession of the ball cannot run and has to remain where they are, such as in netball. The rest of the team can move and get into position to receive the ball.
You cannot score a volley from your own half.
Other team can only intercept after a throw has been made by the otherside, by volleying the ball - of after the otherside have volleyed the ball, by catching it.

The aim of this drill is to side foot volley the ball back into the hands of their partner, showing good control and touch.
After 6 attempts each, swap roles
Coaching points:
Feeder - good, accurate throw underarm to give their partner a chance to perform the skill
Volleying player:
- Light on their toes ready to move and get in line with the flight of the ball;
- position slightly side-on;
- eyes focused on the ball;
- strike the ball with the inside part of your foot;
- ankle locked and strong;

- arms out for balance;
- head still and over the ball
- keep the toe down and foot, ankle, knee and leg, in a straight line.

2. Volleying players to turn and face away from their partners, who call 'turn' as they feed the ball. They turn and have to re-adjust their position and volley the ball back.
3. Increase the distance between the players to 10 yards.
4. Repeat the above but this time volleying the ball with laces.
5. Blue player moves forward and red player moves backward, still serving and catching the volley.
6. Blue player serves over the crossbar and red player volleys into the goal.
