Warm-Up Activity
Set-Up
Players put into 20x20 box. The 6 blues each have a ball, the reds have two small gates to defend (1 yard apart), on the edge of the area.
How
The blues try to dribble their ball through the gates to gain a point (emphasis on the dribble, not kick through). The reds must stop the blues from getting through the gate.
Focus
Coaches will focus on the players defending, looking at overall position and also body position.
When to engage and when to wait.
Key Points
Rotate blue & red players every 2 minutes, to ensure all get to try the defending element.
Ensure blues are getting success with their dribbling through the gate, encourage the blues to work together to outnumber the reds.
The area size is adjustable.
Player numbers are adjustable.

Warm-Up Progression
Same as previous, except this time the central red cone has gone into the area, plus widened the gaps. Now the reds need to be central to the three red cones and be wary of players coming from all angles.
Can they prevent as many blues from getting through as possible?
Ensure reds are not focussing on one player, but attempting to prevent all players from getting through.

Physical Constant play, so the game is continous enabling lots of repetition and high intensity |

Social small groups, potential to mix them up a few times during the time frame to enable new friendship groups to develop or eveolve. |
2v1 Mini-Game
Players placed into groups of three in areas of 10x8.
2 players attempt to get past the third player and stop the ball on the line. Each time it resets the defender changes with one of the attackers (Cycles round after every third go).
If the ball leaves the playing area (sides) then reset (defender has won).
Coaching Points
Defender body position - Block pass and prevent the dribble around, not flat-footed but on the half turn.
Press straight away.
Delay the play as long as possible.
Show them out wide.

Physical Wave game requires effort, especially for early participants. Will be end to end, as the overload swaps |

Psychological Team in possession should have high success, confidence increased and goals should be scored regular due to goal size and small pitch dimensions. |

General Practice - Wave Game
Organisation
20X30 area with full-size goals at each end (this may vary depending on the age/ability of the players and the physical demands required) X2 goalkeepers and 2 teams of 4 players
Due to the wave game aspect allow the session to be reset and played out in blocks of 3, utilise a 2 minute rest period to help maintain the intensity in the practice.
Explanation
Coach plays a ball into the first red player - 1v1 against the blues Keeper.
Once the ball is dead, the coach plays a second ball to a blue player, joined by a second blue player, they form a 2v1 on the initial red player.
Once the ball is dead, the coach plays the third ball to a red player, joined by the existing red player and a second red player from the side, to form a 3v2 on the two blue players.
Once the ball is dead, the session resets and the coach then plays a ball into the first blue player etc.
Conditions, Challenges & Targets
The conditions are a 30x20 area with 2 full-size goals at either end.
The target for both teams is to prevent the opposition from scoring in their goal.
Challenge the out of possession team to recover their defensive shape as quickly as possible and try to protect central areas.
Can the defending team win the ball back, if so go for goal?
Can the defensive team delay the attack for 10 seconds, possession swaps over, go for goal.
Challenge the team in possession to move the ball quickly, commit the opponent to the ball in order to create space to exploit the numerical advantage.
A 10-second count down will help with the intensity of the session and help maintain realism

SSG
Organisation
Pitch 90x50 divided into three thirds. Two full-sized goals, with Keepers. Each third has two reds and two blues. The blue team has one extra player, inducing the reds to be defending the overload continuously.
Explanation
The blue team (uncoached) try to utilise the additional player (who can move into each third) in each third to create and exploit the overload. Initially, not a set player, so any blue player can move from box to box, however, there must always be a minimum of two in each box.
Reds (coached) are to prevent the blues from having success, by hard pressing and blocking off their route to goal. When they win the ball back, try to get the ball up the pitch through the thirds to get themselves a goal as soon as possible, before the blues get their spare man back.
Conditions, Challenges & Targets
Initially, blues have an implicit overload. Potential to change a blue into a neutral player, allowing both teams, when in possession, to have the overload and hence both teams to have the potential to defend against the overload.
As the session progresses, reduce the rigidity of the boxes, allowing players to transfer into other areas with conditions (one in one out, only when the team in possession or when the coach has stated so.)
Considerations
Pitch size can be adjusted.
Player numbers can be adjusted.
Potential for players to be given numbers, on coaches command, players run around the edge of the playing area, leaving their team down one man for a period of time.

Arrival Activity (5 mins)
Arrival Activity
As players arrive they grab a ball and dribble around the 20x20 box (adjustable to suit player age, size and numbers). Bibs are dictated to players on arrival in preparation for the session, by the assistant coach.
The assistant coach calls out commands, such as Cruyff Turn, all players then demonstrate that particular skill. Coach cycles through various turns, skills and ball mastery techniques, and picking up on any players that need feedback.
When the lead coach has set up the session and ready to take the players, he introduces the topic during their ball mastery work. Potential to use Q&A to see what the players already know regarding the topic.
