1v1 Play

1v1 Warm Up

Players start straight away with a 1v1 situation to set the tone for the remainder of the session.  Defenders start with the ball and play into attacker to start the 1v1. 3 minutes then swap the roles, after 6 minutes swap the two fields so they are playing someone new.

Coaching Points

  • Ensure the ball is driven into the attackers to test their touch.
  • Encourage the player on the ball to be as creative as they like,
  • Encourage the defender to close the player down quickly we want the space to be tight as possible.
Progressions
  • Add a time limit for the player on the ball if they score within 10 seconds get 3 points.

2v2 with N

Players Start by playing in a tight grid 2v2.  There are neutrals on the side to be used within possession, they are restricted to 2 touch.  Neutrals can move anywhere they like around the outside of the field.

Play for 3 minutes and keep score for intensity to remain high.

Coaching Points

  • Players on the ball, need to get their head up to make positive choice, to take the player or connect and move
  • encourage players on passes to the neutral to take the ball under pressure
  • Constant movement to free up space whilst being effective on the ball is key
Progressions
  • Neutral can join to make a 3v2
  • Make the game 3v3 and have a 1 neutral option on either sideline.

3v3 To Goal

3v3 to Goal

Play begins with B, playing a give and go with the first defender, the play is then live with a 3v3 to goal.  As soon as that ball is dead, all players stay on the field and will receive a ball from A, then finally C.  So each play is worth 3 points.  Play 5 minutes and then swap the defenders roles.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage the player on the ball to make a forward decision,
  • Players off the ball should be generating as much space as possible and being an option to combine
  • If the ball is lost, stop the defending team from clearing into mini goals
Progressions
  • Mix up the starting location of the players
  • Mix up the order off of the coach shout
  • Instead of dribbling in from wide areas encorporate a throw in for one of them.

Conditioned Game

Conditioned Game 3v3 / 4v4

Players play a normal game within tight spaces.  The key is if the ball goes out on the side of the field that they are defending this will trigger a switch so new players come on.  Play continues for 10 minutes, keep score.

Coaching Points

  • With the key being the transition moment, encourage players on the ball to make positive decisions, so the play can advance forward.
  • Encourage supporting movement to generate space for the player on the ball and to receive further up the field.
  • Encourage as soon as the ball is dead both teams switch mentality straight away.
Progressions/Adaptations
  • Instead of their being an immediate switch, if players are not finding success give them a life system after 3 lifes make the switch.
  • Add a time limit to the team transitioning on, if they score within 10 seconds give them 3 points, to encourage quick positive play.
