Play Phase

Play Phase

Players play small sided game with the condition that in order to score the player that shoots must be in the 'end zone'. As soon as a shot is attempted, the counter attack can be triggered.  Player must run around the cone behind the goal. Whilst this is happening the team that was just defending gets a ball and starts a 3v2 counter attack. There are no offsides.

Coaching Points

  • Allow players to make mistakes going forward however do not allow the same mistakes to get repeated or allow either team to become predictable
  • encourage: combination play, forwards runs, overlaps or by individual skills.  Encourage different ways of scoring.
  • Make sure defensively players track the goal scorer as the closer they are to the goal the quicker they can then start there counter attack.

Technical Phase

To start Player 1 plays a pass into player 2 who checks to receive and opens up to play the ball into player 3. Player 3 receives the ball and then drives back to the start by running with the ball. Player 4 then repeats this process with the other players who have followed their pass.

Progressions:

  • After the second pass player two presses player 3 from the side at full speed. Player 3 must then take a quality touch to escape pressure and get back to the start point.
  • Second progression: add in a 5th player who looks to intercept player 2's pass to player 3 and run back to the start point.

Coaching Points

  • Movement to receive the ball
  • Quality of the first touch to set up running with the ball
  • Speed of the dribble / run with the ball
  • Speed of the pressure from the side
  • Commit to the interception when the passers head goes down
  • Don't get too high defensively too early

Skill Phase

The game begins with a 4v1 rondo in one of the two grids. The reds or blacks look to complete 3 passes as a group against the one defender, once they are successful one player must run with the ball to transfer it into the opposite grid to score a point. One of the two blues can react to this dribble and look to win the ball back. If the blue player is successful he attacks the main central goal and attempts to score. If the blue does not win the ball his team mate must go and defend in the other box in a new 4v1. If the defender in the 4v1 wins the ball they can attack the main goal immediately and can only to pressed / chased by one of the opposition once they break out of the box. Rotate defenders!

Progression

Once the attacking team break out their grid to transfer the ball to the opposite grid one or two players can now go to give the option to pass if needed. This means that both blue defenders can now react to the dribble in the middle section. Go 2v2 to goal if they are successful in winning the ball.

Coaching Points

  • Recognize the correct moment to step out and win the ball.
  • Speed of the counter attack
  • Decision making with or without the ball
  • Pass, dribble or shoot?

Wave Game

Continuous Wave Game

The game begins with one blue dribbling out with a ball to the mid way point of the field before passing the ball into one of the two red players. The game now becomes a 2v1 to goal. Once the game ends with a goal at either end or if the ball goes out of bounds the game then becomes a 3v2 in the blue teams favor. The game then becomes a 4v3 in the reds favor before ending with a 4v4 game. Reset and repeat the process at the end of that game.

Progression

  • Add a time limit to each attack giving the team in possession a certain amount of time to score before a new ball becomes live.

Coaching Points

  • Attack at speed
  • Movement off the ball to create space and passing options
  • Decision making on the ball, pass, dribble or shoot?
  • Length width and depth in possession
