Defensive principles

Area Size  35 x 25

Topic Wave Game

Players: 6 reds and 6 blue with 1 keeper for both teams

Description

Aims of the Practice: For the players to understand the defensive principles during an overload. The defensive principles that will include are on how players positioning their self in order to dictate the attacking player to force the player wide and to slow the play down for the defensive players to put them into a situation where they can intercept the ball. From these players will also learn how to work as a unit whether being set as a back two or a back three.

Description: For the practice, the coach will work with the red team to work on the defensive principles with the blue team working on the attacking principles.

How the wave game will work is the coach will firstly pass the ball to the red team where one player will receive the ball and dribble out to start the game by creating a 1 v 1 with the goalkeeper. From this, after the red player has either scored or miss the player will then trackback to the middle of the pitch. This will then lead to two blue players to come out to create a 2 v 1 overload against the red team but once the blue has had there shot the red team will have two more red players to come out to create a 3 v 2. After the red team has their shot, one blue player will come out as well as one red to create a 4 v 3 overload in favour of the blues. With it then ending with a 5 v 4 in favour for the blues again.

Conditions and Targets: Attacking players have 6 seconds to score when having a numerical advantage to keep the session realistic when attacking in an overload.

If the defensive team win the ball though, they will have a longer time on the ball for work to rest ratio purposes to prevent fatigue but also, therefore, give them a target by winning the ball, the red team will score a point but also have the opportunity to win two points if they manage to score.
