PASSING TO POSSESS: Sequence Passing
- Divide players into groups of 3, 4, 5, or 6. Utilize a larger area and shrink the space as the level of the group improves. Each player within their group should assign themselves a designated number (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4)
- Players will move freely and creatively around the entire grid and pass the ball in sequence among their group (Player 1 passes to Player 2, Player 2 passes to Player 3, etc.)
- Constant player and ball movement. Coaches can apply a lot of progressions and restriction as desired.
Coaching Points:
- Game-like pace: players and the ball never stop moving.
- Passing and receiving technique: QUALITY becomes the most important area of emphasis here. Key focus areas: weight of pass, surface chosen to make the pass, ball travels on ground, receiving towards the next target player, speed of play.
- Movement and communication off the ball: players scanning and always focused on the play so when it is their turn in the sequence, they have the proper body shape, positioning, and in an area where teammates can pass to them quickly and easily to maintain possession.
- Receiving player finding passing lanes and windows to keep better possession: NO RESTING, NO HIDING.
Progressions:
- Touch limits (3-touches, 2-touches)
- Combination play (1-2's, short-short-long, overlaps, 3rd man running, etc.)
