Technical (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Introduce the players to the mechanics of dribbling.
  • Begin to explain the difference between running with the ball and dribbling with the ball.
  • Pitch already set up before the session.

Organisation

  • Using cones, set up a square 5mx5m and a rectangle 15mx5m. Use different colour cones for each one to help the players to visualise it.
  • Each player should have 1 ball each for this drill. Place the number of footballs corresponding to the number of players you are expecting within the smaller square. For this session we are expecting 8 players.
  • Players are to dribble around within the small grid listening out for coaches commands regarding what surface of the foot should be used and which foot. This should be performed when dribbling.
  • On the coaches command, players are to run with the ball into the rectangle and then dribble around in there.
  • Continue to repeat and include/encourage a variety of dribbling mechanics.

Progressions/Regressions

  • Speed up the tempo of the commands to create a high intensity
  • Include more instructions and a skill acquisition to make the players think more.

Coaching Points

  • Coach the mechanics of dribbling
  • Observe the players and identify any issues that may need an individual intervention
  • Get player work rate correct from the beginning.

Skill - Dribbling (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Use the same small grid as previous drill.

Organisation

  • Players to get a ball each before the drill and bring into the area.
  • Players dribble the ball around the grid and must kick other players' ball out of the grid whilst protecting their own.
  • Last player with their ball in the grid wins.

Progression

  • Once players are out of the game, add them back in to tackle. This adds extra difficulty for the  players trying to protect their ball and encourages them to have better control and look for the space.
  • Time the players on how long they have left in the grid to help speed up play. This will also encourage players to make decisions under pressure.
Coaching Points
  • Coach the mechanics of dribbling
  • Observe the players and identify any issues that may need an individual intervention
  • Introduce protecting the ball through dribbling. When to release what.

Skill - RWB (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • 20m x 25m pitch. RWB focused

Organisation

  • Players to have a ball each and line up on one side.
  • One player to stay out (switch player each time) and act as a defender. Defenders aim is to make tackles and get the other players out. Give this player a bib to make them easy to identify.
  • Attacking players need to run with the ball to reach the other side. Once tackled, they will come into the game as another defender. The winner is the last attacker left.

Progression

  • Make the area bigger
  • Alter the player quantity and ability in defence.
  • Set the defender individual targets against individual players.

Coaching Points

  • Players to understand the difference between running with the ball and dribbling. and when best to carry them out.
  • Looking for space - where is the defender focused? Where is best to dribble and run?
  • Communication when in defence as it then becomes a team rather than an individual challenge.
  • Teach the difference between dribbling and running with the ball.

Key Factors

  • Clear pitch and add gates as shown in diagram. 2 even teams shown with bibs.

Organisation

  • Standard game with the constraint of having to dribble through a gate before getting a shot off.
  • The number of consecutive gates a team dribbles through before scoring will equate to the number of points the goal is worth.

Progression/Regressions

  • Introduce different coloured gates for more/less points
