SET-UP
COACHING POINTS: ATTACKING TRANSITION / COUNTER QUICKLY OR KEEP POSSESSION
• If the defending players identify that the in-possession team is out of balance when they give the ball away, their team should attempt to counter quickly towards the goal.
• This will require players to make forward runs quickly, and the player on the ball to inject pace into the attack, by either playing a fast ball forward or by dribbling with the ball at high speed.
• Having players who are proactive in these movements will help the counter-attacking team to score.
QUICK PASSES
• If the defending team wins possession and the opposition is structured behind the ball, the team that has won the ball attempt to secure possession.
• This is because there is no space for them to exploit behind the defensive line, and the chances of creating overloads are slim.
• When attempting to secure possession, the team should attempt to make some quick passes to move the ball away from pressure.
• While they are doing this, the team should attempt to regain its in-possession structure, with players providing width and depth.
• Having players play off limited touches and moving the ball quickly will make it hard for the opposition to counter-press and keep the ball in one area of the pitch.

FUNCTION SET UP
• This 9v9 (plus goalkeepers) game is played box to box and across the full width of a full-sized pitch. All players start in 1 half.
• There is a halfway line that acts as an offside line. Assistant coaches watch for offsides/timing of runs.
• Normal football rules otherwise apply.
• One team should start in a 3-2-3 formation, and the other will be in a 4-1-2-1 formation.
• If a team scores, they will maintain possession. You must score on the transition to win possession or make 10 passes. If the ball goes out of play it starts with the team that starts with possession at the beginning of the round.
• Teams are awarded 3 points if they can win the ball in their half and transition to the other half to score within four passes. 2 points are awarded if teams can win the ball and keep possession for 10 passes.
• An example of the yellows winning possession and combining to score 3 points is shown in the diagram.
COACHING POINT: OUT OF POSSESSION SETTING TRAPS
• To be effective in transition, a team must defend with real intent. Setting traps should be coached throughout this practice.
• When defending, the team should be showing the attacking team into areas of the pitch where they can suffocate the space around the ball and win it back.
COACHING POINT: ATTACKING TRANSITION QUICK DECISIONS
• When a team has won the ball, they need to make quick decisions on whether they are going to secure possession and attempt to keep possession for some time or counter-attack quickly.
• Players will have to make these decisions very quickly, as any hesitation will result in counter-attacking opportunities being missed, or being caught in possession and potentially losing the ball.
• When winning the ball back, there has to be a change of tempo – whether speeding the game up to counter-attack or quickening passes to move the ball away from pressure to maintain possession.
• Once a team has secure possession of the ball, they can slow the tempo again to control the game, if they are in a winning position.
COACHING POINT: TACTICALGAME MANAGEMENT
• Game management can be coached throughout this practice. The state of the game will have an impact on what the team tries to do when they win the ball back.
• If the team is winning, they may choose to try to control the game more by maintaining possession.
• If they are losing, they may attempt to counter-attack more often, to try to get back into the game
