square passing (10 mins)
Square Passing
Grid: 10x10 yards. Players are positioned at each corner.
Progression A. Start with 1 ball (work up to 3 balls), players dribble clockwise to the next cone. They perform a small layoff (close pass) and join the back of the line. Coach ask the players to switch the direction periodically.
Progression B. Start with 1 ball (work up to 3 balls) the players will pass the ball to the next cone in the square and follow their pass. The coach should ask the players to switch the direction of the passes periodically
Progression C. give go- Player 1 passes the ball to Player 2 at the next cone and supports the pass by creating space and triangulating wide not up the line towards the ball. Player 2 the lays the ball back to the supporting Player 1. Player 1 passes the ball again to Player 2 to complete the give and go. Now Player 2 starts the pattern over with the Player 3 at the next cone.
Coaching Points:
-After passing players should move to support the ball on an angle/diagonal and not in a straight line towards the ball.
-Players should triangulate when supporting the ball creating diagonal passing lanes.
-Players receiving the ball should move towards the ball and not play stationary. This movement creates space and time away from the defender.
