Description:

2v2 to wide goals 15x15 grid and goals 3 feet wide - 3 players at each start point.

Instruction:

Blue plays the ball into the red player and comes out to press in a 2v2 situation. The Reds look to attack and score in the two wide goals behind the blue defenders. If the Blue defenders win the ball they look to counter attack to the goals located behind the red players. 2 points if the defensive team score - 1 for the attacking team if they score.

Two reps for each team then swap who plays the pass in and repeat. Switch the teams to the opposite side of the game after 4-5 minutes.

Coaching Points:

  • Reinforce Individual Defending: Pressure, position and patience
  • Immediate pressure on the ball upon losing possession
  • Direct play toward supporting defender (not wide goals)
  • Pressure/Cover in 2's positioning (slide, drop or switch)
  • Descriptive Communication from 2nd Defender (cover player)
  • Recovery Run to prevent penetration and delay
Progression:
  • Only one bigger wide goal - provides angle of approach ideas and Higher line of pressure on ball
  • Central Big Goal -  provides angle of approach ideas and Higher line of pressure on ball.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
How you approach the ball, how do you use your body to challenge for the ball, how do you move your feet defensively.
Technical Tactical
Recognizing when to press aggressively and where to direct the ball when pressing. Start coaching the second and third defender in relation to the ball
Technical Physical
Changing speed to run onto passes, be strong to protect the ball under pressure from the opposition.
Technical Psychological
Switching mentality quickly from attacking defending.
Technical Social
Working together as a group to stop the oppositions build up play.

Pressing from the Build Out Line (20 mins)

Description:

Play begins from the Blue teams GK - They are looking to pass out from the back and score in any of the 3 small goals on the halfway line. The Red team are looking to press the opposition from the build out line and look to score in the main big goal past the GK. Rotate players positions after 4-5 minutes..

Coaching Points

  • Press immediately after ball leaves the goalkeepers hands or feet. Can the closest defender step to the ball?
  • Show me where we would like to direct the play? Why near the goal?
  • Impact the ball, think about your speed as you approach the ball.
  • Show me your body position and your footwork as you approach the play.
  • How can we set a trap to win the ball in a central area?
Progressions
  • Add another attacker to make the challenge more difficult
