Passing Sequence (10 mins)

Organization: Cones organized into two diamonds: one 25*25 and a smaller 10*10 diamond inside. ONE player at each cone in the middle diamond. MAX two-three players at each of the cones on the outside.

Activity: Passing Sequences as follows:

1) Outside player plays to inside player who then plays back to outside player. Outside player will then play the ball to the line to the right. Inside player goes to that other line and outside player becomes inside player.

2) Switch directions.

3) Outside player plays the ball to the inside player and follows pass; inside player plays the ball to the next outside player and moves on to the next line. Pattern continues.

4) Switch directions.

5) Similar to #1 except the inside player overlaps the outside player and receives the ball back.

Coaching Points:

1. Positive / comfortable first touch.

2. Weight / accuracy of the pass.

3. Awareness.

4. Communication.

5. Start slow and gradually pick up the tempo.

Modified 6v3 (15 mins)

Organization: 20*20 grid split into four equal quadrants.  Four teams of 3 players (adjust as needed).  Supply of balls on the outside with a server. One team of three occupies a single quadrant (Red).  Each member of a second team occupies the remaining quadrants (Blue).  A third team (Black) defends(staying near the centre).  The fourth team rests.

Activity: Red competes 3v1 in one quadrant.  Black can only send one defender.  After completing 3 passes, Red look to transition the ball into a neighbouring quadrant.  Blue shift in to support.  Red spread out in the remaining areas. Should Black win possession, they can look to keep the ball or transition to Blue.  Red become the defenders.  Work for 2 minutes, rest for 1 min.  4 repetitions, 1 set.

Progressions:

1. Complete 5 passes prior to transferring the ball.

2. Two defenders enter the quadrant.

Coaching Points:

Move the ball forwards or backwards (avoid square passes).

Field awareness. Finding numerical superiority (2v1) to play forward and penetrate.

Pace of the pass.

Movement off the ball. Proper shape and support.

Receiving with the front foot.

Function (15 mins)

Organisation: Central area slightly smaller than the width of the 18 yard box.  Use two thirds of the length of the field - near attackers' 18 yard box.  Two small goals near the corners of the box. Supply of balls at the top of the defenders' box.  Red play 6 (2CB, 3CM, 1CF) vs. 4 Blue (1CF, 2CM, 1CB).

Activity: Play starts with the defending team (blue) feigning losing possession into red by passing to the CB who then plays across to his fellow CB to initiate play.  CBs. do not actively take part in the play.  Red attack the main goal whilst Blue counter on the small goals.

Coaching Points:

1. Movement off and on the ball.

2. Establish triggers for movement.

3. Choice and type of passes from CBs.

4. Look for opportunities to break lines - over, around and through.

5. What if scenarios.

6. Manage the opposition.

Phase of Play (15 mins)

Organisation: Full field with supply of balls in the Red goal.  Two large goals, two mannequins.  Red play with a 1-4-3-3 formation utilizing only GK, 2CB, 2FB, 3CM & 1CF (mannequins act as the two WFs).  Blue play with a 1-4-4-2 formation utilizing only GK, 1CB, 2CM, 2WM, 1CF.

Activity: 9 v 7 activity (including GKs). Similar to the function, play starts with a transition moment from Blue where they pass the ball into the Red CB (feigning losing possession) and a second pass goes to the other CB.

Coaching Points:

1. Movement off and on the ball - analyze movement of the 6, 8 and 10 relative to the FBs and CF.

2. Establish triggers for movement.

3. Choice and type of passes from CBs.

4. Look for opportunities to break lines - over, around and through.

5. What if scenarios.

Final Game (15 mins)

Organization: 60*40 yard grid. One main goal on each end line. Supply of balls beside each goal.

Activity: 8v8 game (including GKs).  Adjust according to numbers.  Regular LOTG.  Perhaps some coaching over but limit the number of stoppages.  Reinforce objectives from the session.

Coaching Points:

1. Dispersal - create width in attack (defenders are high and wide).

2. Positive touch forward. Quality passes - speed of play.

3. Open body position - receive on back foot. See all your options/check your shoulders.

4. Create triangles. Use central player as a possible outlet.
