Description

What: Progressing through the middle third.

Who: 4-5-2-3-6-8-10 vs 4-3-3

Where: Middle Third / Defensive third

When: Ball start from a Goal kick or goes out to FB

Why: To control the game, penetrate and arrive in the final third.

What if: Opponent regains the ball centrally near our goal?

OPTION 1 - Get compact, bring lines together and force them to play back

What if: They play a direct long ball wide?

OPTION 2 - Shift, make recovery runs.

Progressing Through the middle third

ORGANIZATION:

  • 2 thirds of a full pitch
  • 18 players
  • 8v10

DEVELOPMENT: The team in possession scores in any of the 3 small goals. 

  • Play start with GK, he plays short to one of the CB
  • If the opponent wins the ball, they can either play back to their defense line or go forward and score in big goal.
  • The back line can play a long ball

PRINCIPLE: Make the field bigger

Sub Principle: Distance between teammates 

Sub - Sub Principle: Open body shape, Find space.

COUNTER PRINCIPLE: Keep the space compact, do not allow penetration and force the mistake.

COACHING POINTS:

  • GK's serve must be with quality and to the proper feet of his teammate.
  • #5 & #4 can dribble to next zone and create numerical superiority or equality.
  • FB can attack the next zone if CB decides to dribble.
  • Anticipate the long ball by looking at the body language
  • Pressure after ball loss
