Setup: 2 10 by 10 squares with a cone in the center of both on one end. Starting cones for players to stand by. 6 players in each group.
Instruction: Player A will pass the ball to player B and then close down immediately using the 4 rules from the technical instruction session. Player B will attempt to score by knocking over the cone standing between the 2 disc cones. Players will switch lines after each attemp.
Progression: Keep score. Attackers get 2 points for knocking over the cone and 1 point for getting across the end line. Defenders get 1 point for a tackle that ends with possession (Must stay inside grid) and they get 2 points for successfully channeling the player out of the grid.
Coaching points: 4 Rules- Close Down/Break Down/Get Down/Show Down.
*Make sure the players are leaving enough space and NOT stabbing to win the ball
* Make sure the players are showing the player to one side to make them predictable. Preferably that players weaker foot.
*Only 1 small cone goal is used to allow success to the defender. Confidence matters!

Technical Instruction (20 mins)
Setup: Only shows 1 set of partners.
-Partners get on cones about 10 yards apart.
Instruction:
Start with just allowing the players to pass back and forth for about 5 minutes. Be sure to touch on the proper passing ans recieving techniques while they do this. The players will make 5 passes then on the 5th pass, the player that passed it will close down the player with the ball and do their 4 basic defending steps. The defending player will then back pedel back to their cone and they will start their 5 passes all over again.
-Start going over the 4 defending rules 1 at a time correcting them as they freeze in the stance each time.
- 4 Defending rules
1) Close down - The player should get to the ball as fast as possible.
2) Break down - The player should start to take much smaller steps (shuffle) as they get near the ball. Now is the time to leave space
3) Get down - The player should bend the knees with chest over toes to get in a good athletic stance that will allow quick movements. Keep the feet moving.
4) Show down - The player should show the ball/opponent to one side to make them predictable. Come on the ball at an angle.
Progression:
-Now have the players apply shadow pressure (Just showing pressure but not trying to win). They will each take turns going back and forth dribbling (slowly) while the other maintains their defensive stance back peddling with the attacker.
