THE SESSION: Goalie Wars (Team)
Split Group into even teams, start with all balls split evenly in the goals.
3 vs 3 goalie wars, not allowed in opposition half, if you shoot and miss you have to go and get your ball so a 3 v 3 may turn into a 3v2 or even 3v1 should 2 players miss their shots.
Once your team concedes a goal you are off and the next team from the side must get into the goal FAST.
The reason they must get in fast is that the team who scored the goal to restart the game get a ball from their own goal and do not have to wait for the other team to get set before shooting.
Continue for set amount of time and whoever is champions at the end wins. or alternatively come up with scoring system eg. every team you knock out you get a point for.
KEY POINTS:
- Competition
- Team Work / Unity
- All GK Basics
- Ball Striking correctly
PROGRESSION:
- Allow keepers who catch the ball cleanly to throw ball in the back of the net (overarm bowl)
KEY MESSAGES:
- Main aim is to get keepers having FUN. This kind of fun fast paced and competitive environment is perfect for bringing out the best in youngsters and so keep it fun.
- be loud, enthusiastic and keep coaching points to short interventions - keep it fast paced.
- ensure the teams on the side are always observing and on their toes ready to get on the pitch at any time.
- engage with players on the side "Who do you think is going to win? What is he doing right/wrong? Try and score one with your left foot" etc. High energy is key to success of this session. The kids see you with high energy levels, they will give the same themselves.

GK Wars (Numbers) (30 mins)
THE SESSION: Goalie Wars (Numbers)
Put GK's into pairs of a similiar age, number them pair 1 pair 2 etc. and then tell each pair to split one behind each goal (Green/Yellow)
Basically the numbers game, coach on the side calls a number and first one around their cone and through the gate gets the ball. If they score they get 2 points if they miss the target the other team gets a point and the player MUST go and get the ball (v. important for continuity of session and teaches players to get shot on target!)
Start with player being unable to leave his/her half. Once the ball goes out either to the side behind or a goal the pairs go back into their box with the team and the next number is called.
KEY POINTS:
- GK Basics, good footwork, set position, positioning in relation to where the ball is, correct diving technique, body shape, concentration, awareness, reactions.
- main point is FUN, only step in briefly with small coaching points. not a hugely technical session but great for ice breaking within a group and providing repeated shots, saves and a lot of success.
PROGRESSION:
- allow players to dribble into other players half (1v1 situation practice)
- Shout more than one number so players can work in pairs to protect goal/score goal.
KEY MESSAGES:
Speed through the gate, good first touch from attacker and good clean strike ON TARGET.
For GK's key message would be to react to any saves made eg. up on their feet ready for rebound and to reinforce basics in the sense of GK basics Drill/positioning drills.
