Goal Kicks can cause headaches for teams and at times can become a goal scoring opportunityfor the oppsiton team. Here are some key points for setting up Goal Kicks:
- Encorage your goalkeeper to take all goal kicks. They should get the ball!
- It is the outfield players responsibility to get into positions & set up quickly
- NEVER pass the ball across the goal when taking goal kicks
- Outfield players should be on their toes, alert & ready to react to the goal kick
Options:
(1) The Right/Left Defenders must move quckly into a wide position, even if they are level with the goal kick. If central defender receives the ball they should look to pass the ball up the line. If they are being marked by an attacker they should not be given a pass.
(2) If option 1 is not available the goal keeper should look to play the ball out wide to the Right/Left Forward. These Forwards should be as wide as possible to stretch out the opposition.
(3) The final option for the goalkeeper should be to play the ball long and off center into the Central Forward. Make sure the forwards are goal side of their defender to win the ball.
